Replacing/Disabling DEF System???

Grason

Livin the dream
My brother and I are looking at a 2011 F550 mini dump that needs some work. The major issue with the truck is that the DEF system was contaminated and needs to be replaced. The dealer that is selling the truck told me it would cost roughly 4-5K to replace and they are not going to spend the money to fix it up. The truck needs a list of repairs, which I can handle except for the DEF system because I have not worked on newer trucks before.

My question is, what all is involved with replacing a DEF system? I would imagine its a tank, pump of some sort, and an injector, etc... ( I'm just guessing, I don't know ).

Has anyone ever disabled/removed one? I would rather not go that route because it is a commercial vehicle, but I would like to get opinions on both options.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Grason

I've "heard" that you can remove def tank and the exhaust system with dpf and replace it with a free flowing exhaust. Ecm will have to be tuned and shut egr off, better way that I have heard is to remove egr cooler

Interesting, so its basically a matter of removing the tank, exhaust system, reprogram the ECU, and do an EGR delete...I thought there would have been more to it than just that.

Thanks,

Brother just did this. New exhaust setup and remove the tank and connections and programmer. But he will have issue when he has warranty or if dot stop him.

DOT would be my biggest concern. I was thinking about leaving the tank installed so it looks like it hasn't been tampered with. I don't know what the chances are they would crawl under the truck and look at the exhaust though. The truck is being sold as-is due to the current issues, so warranty is a non issue. We have not purchased it yet, I am trying to figure out exactly what it needs before we proceed any further.

Go find some kid that wants to delete his truck. Tell him you'll trade him a tuner for his stock exhaust. Presto <1k dpf system.

We've deleted almost all of our 6.4l and 6.7l trucks at work.. All are registered Commercial Apportioned and have yet to have any trouble with the DOT. I pull the DEF tank when i swap exhaust (Lighten the load and frees up space). I'm running SCT X4 with custom tunes. Whole package (Exhaust and Tuner) sets me back $1200 per truck.

Grayson what did you end up doing? I was on the side of the road last night for 3 hours waiting for help in my buddy's 6.7 because it shut down with a plugged dpf. I couldn't believe we couldn't limp it home.
