Back in a TDI!

Well the ol' mini van is all but dead, so I picked up a 2011 Jetta today. Only 22k miles, has the DSG auto trans. Seems to run and drive great. Only a couple questions, do all of the autos cruise at higher rpm than the manuals? My old '12 6spd was about 2k rpm on the freeway, this is about 22-2300rm. Also do they all get that much less milage than the 6spd, or is it because of whatever VW did to "fix" them? Currently showing about 41mpg, to where my old one would have been 46-48mpg for same drive.Click the image to open in full size.

There's a guy in York PA that will flash them back to "pre-fix" condition. Enjoy the missing 50 lb ft of torque and poor mileage due to raised shift points. Biggest complaint i have post-fix is horrible cold characteristics and increased def consumption (not an issue for you i know)

Yeah, going to do some digging, not ruling out an aftermarket tune, but this is not a hot rod. Being my drive is about 95% highway, I'm hoping to get closer to 50 than 40mpg. A re-tune may be in order, but only if the price isn't crazy.

For reference, we've got a 2019 Jetta SEL 1.4t and just put on 2,000 miles in three days. Average MPG was 43.9mpg (hand calculated). I've been really happy with it, so just a heads up so you don't have to feel like you NEED a TDI.

We got our SEL new for $21,500 (with 7yr/84,000m bumper to bumper warranty), but you can find the base models for around $14k brand new.

We've been really happy with it so far. Only at 5,000 miles though.

Put little over 400 miles on it so far, filled it up, hand calculated at 39mpg. Not bad, but not quite what I'd hoped for. Still haven't had a chance to do much digging to see if the ~400rpm higher cruising speed is just how the auto trans are, or if it's the fix. Other than possibly a tune to jump up the mpg, I wouldn't mind some sort of gauge display, as these only have idiot lights. Either way it's still a huge upgrade over the mini van I had been driving, and even at "only" 39mpg, I shouldn't have much trouble making the payments with fuel savings alone!

My 13 TDI ran around 2300 RPM at 70mph. I made 40-42mpg all the time, hand calculated. That was a mix of city/highway.
In the winter I could hit 45mpg with AC off on the highway. Yes, the AC compressor made a difference in mileage.

Sent you a PM.

Corenlius, that's good feed back about the SEL. I do miss my Jetta at times for the ride and long road trips with only a suit case to carry. If the gasers can hit that mileage, why even consider a diesel? The 18mpg in my 1/2 ton Chevy sucks, but I can take customers to lunch with plenty of room.

That's about where mine is running, should add there was probably at least an hr of idle time on that tank, letting the a/c run with the kids waiting on the wife at various stops.

I can second that! Mine is a 2018 SEL 1.4t. Just finished a 1,000 mile round trip from NC to PA and back with the AC on and cruise set at 75 most of the time. Saw 41 MPG for the trip. Think it was around $20k and it came with the 6yr/72,000 mile warranty.

I picked up my 2014 JSW DSG a few months ago and I've put 5-6K miles on it. I'm averaging 35 mixed driving, and my best tank was coming back from Reno and I got 41MPG. I think most of this is because of the fix. I had a 2012 6spd Jetta and stock it got about 42-44 average. After I tuned and deleted it I got about 45-50MPG. I had a friend with a JSW that was fixed and he deleted it and picked up 7MPG.

My wife has a 1.4t and generally gets better then me. Kinda bums me out a bit, and it's only rated at 140HP but it's the strongest 140HP I've ever felt. Best entry level motor in a econo car I've ever driven.

x2. I've been really impressed with it. The Ford Focus 2.0 we had was a little quicker, but the fact that there is so much more room in the Jetta and it gets about ~8mpg better mileage, is just awesome.

With an APR ECU it would probably run really fricken good. Don't think she'll let me do that, though.

They don't have a 1.4t cal released yet. Some guys in Europe are doing around 300hp with K04's and larger injectors though. Stock longblock. Not too bad!

Ah, your right. My mother in law just got a 1.8 Jetta, honestly power feels similar to my wifes. Not a whole lot of difference.

Anyone else get nailed by the stage three or whatever emissions fix that came out in 2018? Took my 2015 passat in for a DEF injector line only to find out I needed the entire emissions system changed. The service manager said I would experience a 5mpg drop, increase of def usage, lower power, and a louder engine. I am not paying for it since it’s a *fix*, Still pissed off about it. They also told me that if I don’t get the fix VW flags the vin and I can’t get it emissions tested and obviously it wouldn’t be legal. Basically my car was held at ransom with no other option than to let them spend an entire day *fixing* my car.

Is there a way to "unfix" the car afterwards and still be able to pass emissions testing?

Would unfixing be a "pre-flash?"

Even though I have no intention on hot rodding this thing, thoughts still enter my head. Such as how much larger of a turbo could I get away with since this car runs approximately 400rpms higher than my old manual trans car? Assuming it has a mild tune from being deleted at the point of needing a new turbo?

Getting the itch with this thing to do something to it, just cant make up my mind. The tdi forums leave a bit to be desired from a technical standpoint after being on here. Seems any sort of aftermarket intake is the devil and will certainly kill my turbo within a yr! Not looking at deleting, so not much to do on the exhaust side. Seems like itd be ripe for a good re-tune, but the options aren't many. Seems as though there's nothing you can really do yourself, like with a smarty or edge. And the two that keep popping up are malone and kerma. Both are get what you get, no adjustability by the end user. Leaning towards kerma, but was left uncertain after calling them.

Are there any shops that do anything with these cars, or with their history, and recent epa push, are they considered poisonous to the aftermarket guys? Would love to just be able to take it to Firepunk and have them tune it, but nothing on the website, and haven't heard back from an email yet.

Leave the TDI alone and just drive it. Go hot rod your Cummins instead.
