I can't speak for what other companies do for their "comp" injectors. But I do know that around the 5x018" size, we start to see gains from edge filter removal. Also, when it comes to needle work, typically we see small to zero gains on smokey/air limited setups, whereas engine combinations that have excess airflow meaning they clean up all the smoke, adding needle work can result in substantial 50+ HP performance gains. When a customer calls in looking for 800+ HP on a 12v, and they plan to street drive it, we normally are going a little larger on the injector setup say 5x022 with edge filter removal but no added needlework whereas for a race truck, a heavily modified 5x018 can usually deliver enough fuel. A 5x022 on a healthy injection pump will normally run fairly clean when the injection event is kept short whereas a heavily modified 5x018 will have nasty idle haze, midrange smoke, and clean up a little on the top end.
