"wake up shunshine"

I've ran over 8000 rpm when I had the A-pump.The problem is that it would only last so long before the plungers would lock and the rack would jam.Apparently the larger the plunger then the less likely it will survive high rpm.The 10mm bosch lasted for a while.If you were to run 8.5,9 or 9.5mm then It would take more abuse for longer.Our A-pump had lots for work done to it.

We had the cam re worked,stiffer plunger springs,AG gov with lightened weights,delivery valve mods,rack mods etc....Also supplied with a fass at 55 psi and lots of stanadyne lubricity.

The guys across the pond seem to be more determined to make things work I guess.I've heard of many high HP TDI's and mercs running either VE/VP or inline inj pump over there.

If you max out a smaller plunger then injection duration is longer.We choose to run a larger plunger (13mm) at half speed to let it survive and keep duration within reason.I don't use much rack travel to put out plenty of fuel for my engine.My half speed system has yet to be proven a real success though.If the weather holds I might get out this weekend for testing,Fingers crossed.

There are some that say common rail should do the job too...

We have not figured out the A-pump yet, by the way. Delivery valve flow is the hang up. I need to get down to Mt. Diesel and figure a way to mount a larger volume delivery valve. Rich is a little afraid of running the thing that fast in his stand. lol
 
Because I'm stupid, I've put thought into this. Actually think-tanked it a few years ago over several weeks. Here's the deal, Tobin already touched it, the burn rate of diesel. Audi can afford to have custom diesel made, and they're not using a janky, mechanical, antique platform. Find someone that has real, accurate, in cylinder pressure data, and you'll find your grail. Unfortunately it's not in a Cummins, or something someone short of a multimillionaire can conjure.

Also, 5.9L piston speed is 4720fpm at 6000rpm, since that's been brought back up

If you go back starting around post #809 in the Ram50 build thread. You will kinda see my knowledge evolving when I started listening to folks.

Saying Audi couldn't get it done as a blanket statement is false..., furthermore I think what we need to know and learn is laying in front of us. As a matter of fact I really can't believe no one else has picked up on the simplicity of it all.

I really cannot set my goals to that level. I'm smart enough to recognize this point. However, I do believe in something regardless of how it came to me or who wants to criticize me. I just want to play in this diesel motorsports world in a little bigger way. I have drawn up on paper with my old college drafting tools, a 600 cu in engine that will fit under my old '90 models hood with no mods. As a matter of fact, the actual footprint is only one inch longer than the Scheid LSM billet water block I have.

I don't have enough knowledge to get it done yet. I'm trying to learn with this thread.

For some reason I keep getting 1237.8 ft/min??
 
I just poked it in the Wallace racing calculator. It seemed awfully high to me but that's what came up. Your number sounds closer to correct

Well, the formula I found is stroke x rpm ÷ 6 = piston speed in fpm. So, 4.72 x 6000 ÷ 6 = 4720. What am I missing?

Sorry about that. I was just worried the scratch on the wall I made while talking with Zach may have not been recorded correctly. I honestly did the calcs a few years ago and have lost the papers.

I poked out at you younger fellas, maybe even some of you in mechanical engineering school, that may have been successful at this simple calculation.

Gonna take a awful lot of air to feed 600 inches @ 8k. At that rpm on even a 14mm A pump timing is going to need to be ridiculously high.

I would think a big bore short stroke 400ish inch engine would be better suited.

I'm seriously trying to imagine a head with possibly 2 injectors per cylinder, and 2 14mm p7100's each run at 1/4 engine speed......

I wonder how this Sigma I have sitting here would deal with 8k....

Has anyone ever pulled the valve cover off the top of one of these new Kohler diesels that Polaris is using? I couldn't believe what I saw...

Yes lots of air. Have you seen this Garett I bought?? lol Seriously, this thing is something else.

We have spun our Mt. Diesel 13mm pump to 6000rpms making power. We had some go pro stuff coasting faster than that. I thinks the pumps will do it.

You bring up another point that I think I added to the conversation somewhere or at least meant to, swirl. Jody Stirewalt told me not to touch his as cast ports and not to worry to much about the bigger valves, his head would do 1500hp because of the swirl. I am considering running a much larger bore. Maybe two injectors will be the ticket to capture more of the down force the fuel should provide.

Any inputs on the combustion chamber design? All I have seen are flat head and bowl in piston?
 
Get some dynamic in cylinder pressure data.

I would throw away the idea of a mechanical injected high RPM diesel engine.

I love and admire Clessie, but look when he wrote that book compared to what we know now. I wouldn't use that book as Gospel.
 
Takes energy to swirl air. Good or bad, that is for you to decide. Just throwing it out there.
