Race Trailer Renovation

Figured I would start a thread for the upcoming plans I have for my race trailer project. Just a little backround on me and this trailer... I have always wanted an enclosed trailer with living quarters, my parents still have lego rigs I made when I was a young kid of a tow rig with big enclosed trailer. I bought my current trailer off RacingJunk a couple years ago for $13k after decades of dreaming. Its a 48' Cargo Craft Eliminator with 28' of garage and 12+8' of living quarters. It has a Onan gasoline 7000w generator, 16' awning, halogen pit lights, 12v and florescent interior lighting, Dometic gas/elec fridge, gas furnace, hot water heater, stove, and furnace. It does have a small bathroom with shower as well.

My plans are to upgrade things in three separate categories.

Mechanical: Getting to and from the track. (tires, wheels, axles, brakes, springs)

Functional: (things that make our lives easier/nicer on the road)

Cool stuff: (Things we dont really need, but look cool or are nice to have)

For the further races (ODSS) we will stay in the trailer for 4-6 days straight, with at a minimum it will be me, my wife, and our youngest daughter (3yro). So the #1 concern with that is the fresh water supply. Right now I have a 25 gallon fresh water tank, I would like to go to something bigger of figure out a good way to transport water to the trailer. I was thinking about bringing a 20-30 gallon tank in the bed of my truck with a 12v pump... not sure on that yet. There are so many things I want to change... Ill just make a list and go over them as they come.

List of changes:

Cleaning

Resealing roof

Replacing rotted flooring

Replacing trailer brakes

Replacing/repacking bearings

Rebuilding offset hitch

Larger generator fuel tank

Painting cabinets

New counter tops

Larger shower

More freshwater storage

Garage organization

Garage lighting

Outdoor sound system

Outdoor lighting

Trailer lighting upgrade

Garage AC Unit

I figure putting ~$5000 in this trailer is a worthwhile investment that will actually add value if I ever sell.

I started this weekend by compounding and polishing some of the aluminum on the trailer... it was an azz whoopin... I spent 17hrs in two days just compounding. It did make a huge difference though. I have two new tires getting mounted so that is why they are missing on one side.Click the image to open in full size.

I kinda like the way it looks without the red and white reflective tape... according to the law I dont have to have it because it has living quarters. Im just not sure if its worth the risk of being pulled over and messed with.

All cleaned up, polished both fenders, steps, diamond plate under the neck, and stripped and painted the jacks/bracing/rear metal part of door the frame.

Looks really good man- I believe you got into that one right.

Thank You!

That compounding was some work for sure. The first day was only 4hrs after work on Friday, Saturday was 7:30am to 8:30PM... Thats a good full body workout, from your calves to hands everything was sore the next day from holding onto that buffer.

Holy cow that buffing made a huge difference. I would have probably paid some high schooler $100 to take the first pass

If you build that trailer like you built the truck, it'll be one very nice setup!

I appreciate it! I think most of the guys that race often do as much or more work, they just dont post about it. I like to share so guys interested in getting into the sport have an idea of what all happens in the back round.

You got a steal on that trailer! Would have sold for 18-20K in this area the way it was when you purchased it...

Snap some pictures of the living quarters! If you were near my area I would have hooked you up with some parts!

It looks awesome after the compound, and I also agree to keep the DOT tape off the trailer. Do yourself a favor and get a roll or 2 of it and keep it in the trailer so that if you get pulled over you can just slap it on before he writes the ticket.

Let me know with any questions you have and I can help to the best of my ability!

Will do, I took the trailer back to my propertty south of town. One of these days I will build a house and shop out there and will have everything in one spot... I cannot wait to have a real shop.

I appreciate it.

On your larger water tank, they make bladders. You see them used on boats where they can be installed in a storage or bilge area with a small opening, so no modification to the boat or access hatch has to be made. Just hook your lines up and cram it in there.

You see allot of sailboats use them to add capacity, on the long haul boats. They work well
