I'm not just looking for power. Been down that road, got the paper, I'm good. What I want is good power while also being able to broaden the powerband, or at least move it in an area where it's more enjoyable to drive.
I don't plan to make more overall horse power with it, hopes are to make more power down low.

I'm saying that based on the required work and the questionable durability if you don't do the tappets too vs. the gain you'll possibly get. If it were me just fixing a leak I would just fix the leak and leave it alone. If I was going into the engine for a major rebuild/repair, I would consider doing a cam as I would also do the tappets without question along with it. IMHO

I would just throw another seal on it but I'm worried that the mating surface has a grove in it. So my plan is to tear the entire front end apart anyways. Not a big deal but still. While I'm in there I figured might as well.
As far as the tappets go, I did plan on replacing them but I need to find a metal trowel to hold the tappets in place. Any thoughts?

I ran a 188/220 hamilton on 2 builds. street driven all the time. both times I tore it down the cams had pitting damage on a few lobes. 165 springs. Dunno if i needed to change oil more maybe? I ran the zinc additive. Truck was a smoky pos so I bet oil dilution was more than normal.

Probably end up doing that. Just heard horror story's with using PVC.
I can't remember, are you still in the stock cam?
Seems like there's a few people who have had trouble with Hamilton. Reading things like that make me have second thoughts.

Yes stock cam and you will have to pull it from my cold dead hands. After seeing Tylers and clearance issues associated with a certain "drop in" cam. I'm good. I know of a vp truck running mid 10s with a stock cam. Should be no issue for me to be close to that with a peepump.

I hear ya and honestly Tyler's pictures are mainly what have me second guessing a cam.
I might just look to put the money else where but really in the middle right now.

I've run a few different cams, with no abnormal wear on any of them. But I do run the zinc additive.
Performance wise, the stock cam is hard to beat, unless you need higher rpms than it can handle (low-mid 3000s). I'm currently running an aftermarket cam, but that's more because it's beefier, and I was worried about breaking the stock cam with a 13mm pump.
Next time the engine is apart, I may try the 178/208 to see if it does better than the 188/220 I'm currently running.
Using thin-wall 2" aluminum tubing works well for the trough. It has a little more maneuvering room than PVC, and it's non magnetic.

I was considering a Hamilton 188/220 for my '04 I'm rebuilding, but after lots of reading and questions, I ended up deciding to keep the stock cam in my build. If I was trying to run a biggish single, and race the truck, then maybe. But it's a DD/play truck with compounds, so the stock cam is more than adequate.

Thanks for the reply. It's good to hear unconventional ideology in use and working.
