Gearing up For Engine Assembly, have some questions
I am getting pretty close to reassembling my engine now, for the most part I’m just waiting on my cylinder head to get finished up.
I used the Isky tool on their rental program to cut O-ring grooves in my cylinder block, I set them all at .029”. I have ARP 625’s to use and I have read of people using both .041 SS annealed safety wire and also .041” SS hardened spring wire. I have both on hand, which one is better suited?
When you guys have bought brand new pistons do you measure anything other than the skirt diameter for checking piston to bore clearance? Or do y’all measure them in several places to make sure they are not distorted? Several people have told me they just measure the skirt and then install them, but I’m a little Leary of that just because of my luck. And when my block was bored originally 7 years ago one of my 6 pistons was distorted according to the machine shop and I had to replace it.
When installing the paper type gasket behind the timing case and rear main seal plate do you guys have better luck with putting a light smear of rtv on both sides of the gasket, a light coat of gasket dressing or just the gasket by itself? Or just rtv by itself?
I’m only wanting 400-450hp max, I’m going to start off with a S300G and go from there if I need better egt control.
I appreciate input, I’d like to get this thing back on the road for my farm rig and am flat tired of leaks and tired of working on it.

I don't know on the wire question but I would think hardened would be better?
I've always skinned the paper with RTV, but most 'real' mechanics say they only use the paper gasket with a dab of RTV where it meets the oil pan gasket.

I personally used Right Stuff in the corners where oil pan meets timing case and rear main housing. No dressing on the gasket faces, just a well cleaned and prepped surface.
I sometimes use aviation sealant on the surface, touch the gasket to it, remove, let setup, then install gasket. I think it’s aviation sealant. That stuff is thin in viscosity, sticky, and always drips down the side of the container. I know which one it is by the messy can.

I would think the same thing on the wire honestly, but I figured I’d ask the masses since I’ve heard of people using both.

I think I know the stuff your talking about, we used to use it on the diesel fuel lines we would run for fire pumps.
I’ve heard good stuff about that great stuff, I’ll pick some of that up.
Another question I have, when I was ordering a new cam, push rods and valve springs I went ahead and got a bronze camshaft retainer, anyone have any issues running one of these on a DD ?

I’ll have to clean the residue off the label and see what that stuff actuality is.
Wasn’t there a thread some time ago about sealants everyone prefers? I know we had a solvent based cleaner thread.

I like Indian Head on a paper gasket, and Right Stuff any where there is a seam, or step, on the components.

That sucks the worst. Getting into a job, then getting tired of looking at it.
That's when you tend to rush it. Cut corners.
Don't do that.

That’s the truth, I’m definitely not trying to cut any corners on this thing though, because if it ever gives me issues again it’s going away. I don’t have the time or desire to do repair work on a truck I’m only using occasionally anymore. I have to get this thing done pretty quickly though, I only have 4-1/2 months until my wife has our kiddo so Lord knows my time for all my farm projects after that is going to get cut down lol.

Yeah that’s it, I have a can of the Permatex 80019. The only thing I’ve used it on personally is threaded 1/2” black pipe for diesel fuel lines. Good to know it works for other stuff too

Another question comes to mind, is there any reason to not run the Cummins #3802481 exhaust valves on a DD ?

I wouldn't see why not. They are inconel in stock form I believe. If you are staying with the stock size I believe most guys run them on DD's up to pretty big power.
Guys change intake valves for inconel ones but the exhaust already are so should be G2G

After having an issue with my new engine, I will always suggest a touch of sealant on oil pickup tube gasket. The gasket had the slightest defect in it and it wouldn't allow it to easily prime itself.

That stinks man, it cause any damage or just the slow priming? I am planning on drilling the fastener heads on the oil pickup and safety wire them just for a CYA. I’ll probably do that on those gaskets
