95' Junker Drag Truck

The NHRDA race was a blast.

Seemed like there was plenty of traction, not sure if it was the hot day/good track prep, or if my traction bar adjustments helped, either way I cut 3 of my best 60' times.

The best pass was the first pass 12.30 @ 111 MPH.

The truck is still laying over a little on the top end, it seems to be gear bound from the small 27" slicks.

I also think I found the limit of this single disk converter. As the day progressed, my MPH and ET dropped significantly however boost seemed to remain the same. I could feel a little more "slip" as the day progressed. It felt like the converter would slip a little on each gear shift and then regain lock-up halfway through the gear.

After being eliminated in the first round, I reinstalled my street tires and took it for a drive. The converter feels like it's slipping a little on the street as well and when it does regain lock-up, it spins the tires even in overdrive.


Overall I'm happy with the increased drive-ability of the twins and it looks like they can definitely support more fuel.

It was fun watching that thing roll down the strip, and then listen to all WOW'S when it did a 12.30.

But hey on a positive note you won the burnout contest!!! hahahah It was great meeting you. Hope to see it go even faster in the future!!

As for the rear end, You cant beat a 4 link with adj coils. Gives you tons of options and geometry to play with to get weight transfer dialed in.

WOW! That's even with the tailgate on and in the up position! Any plans on removing it or putting a cover on the bed to reduce drag?

After losing in the first round (holeshot win for the other guy), I competed in the burnout competition.

After burning some 245/75/16 Michelin stock spare tires down from 99% to 25% tread in the burnout competition, I decided to take a my brother-in-law for a short ride. When we returned to the Speedworld grounds, a guy came up yelling that my tailgate was about to fall off. Apparently, the bed rails are a little loose and the welds are broken down low so the tailgate was hanging by the cables and not supported on the pivots. I think there is a good chance I'll have to remove the tailgate and support the bed rails with braces. The truck hooked up really well, so well in fact that I didn't dare mess with removing the tailgate or changing tire pressure for fear or messing up the good combination. I was running 17.1 psi in the driver's rear tire and 17.7 psi in the passenger rear slick.


It was a fun event and I'll definitely have to attend next years event.
 
Here is a copy of my first time slip. I left soft expecting it to spin like usual and it hooked like glue. I wonder how quick it would have been had I tried a 5 to 7 psi launch.

You were going the same mph as your 12.7 run? Definitely interesting, much better bottom end, but running out of the top end? Looks great though!
 
Congrats on the new times man! So have you figured out the total budget bill of what all has been spent to take it to where its at now?
 
nice 60ft! I've pulled a 1.9 60ft on street tires. Looking to get into 1.7-1.6 with slicks
 
Good meeting you man! Truck was dang rough, but we'll try and get you into some event coverage as well as some pictures on the website. I talked to a few people hanging out in the pits that knew you as the "smoke cloud that rose above the entire dragstrip" LOL

Again, good meeting you, and those road race slicks hook good! A lot softer than the compound I ran on my truck a few years ago.

The purchase price of the truck was $1500.

Off the top of my head, there is another $1500 in actual performance parts and probably $500 in misc items like fluids, filters, adhesives, belts, hoses, etc.


I have saved almost every receipt from this truck, so I'm going to have to add it all up and come back with a more precise total.
 
Just finished uploading a short clip of the Junker's burnout from the NHRDA burnout competition. Check it out, the speedometer needle was straight down bouncing off of the odometer reset peg somewhere between 140 and 150 MPH if the markings went that high. The RPM gauge was bouncing between 3900 and about 4100 RPM for a calculated max wheel speed of roughly 150 MPH. The rear tires where stock Michelin 245/75/16 spare tires mounted on stock spare steel wheels.

The burnout contest is just 30 seconds long and with the fast spooling twin turbo setup, it took just 4 seconds to surpass 100 MPH in overdrive and the engine was fully tacked out within 5 seconds.

You need taller rubber.....I ran 26" tall tires a few years back....went like crazy for the first 1/8 mile, then just not enough gear, even with a 5K kit. Find a 32-33" tall tire and roll with it;)

I know your doing this on a budget, but you should be able to find something reasonable....I've found a total of 8 34.5/17-16's now for less than $1500...usually they are $389/ea....that's what I'll be running on my 1/2 ton with 3.73 gears.

nice burnout, i subscribed to your youtube channel, once I get some more work im gonna get another beater 12v and build, I've been looking for fun and finding a truck under 2k shouldn't be tough, and my brother has been itching to build a tranny so ill let him build this one so its done right.

I also love the idea of a junker truck build.

If I had room, time, and money I'd like to pull some old scrapped diesels out of the junkyard to tinker with. I really wanna play with 2-stroke Detroit Diesels.
 
That thing is movin man! Friend of mine there in Vegas watched you run one day, I think it was during the time you had the GT4294 on there. He calls me and says "I'm here at this drag race, there's this P.O.S. Cummins running high 12's man you gotta come see it!" LOL
