Alright guys. I've heard its bad and I've heard it wont hurt anything as long as you keep it in a reasonable rpm range. What's the real truth?

go by egts. in all my vp trucks with any h.p adders it gets hot! i always run my with o/d off and have the rpms 1800-2200

If you can't tow in OD either the motor or the trans isn't built right.

I can tow in overdrive. I have a Firepunk built trans. I was just curious about towing in OD... The myths and whatnot.

4.10 gears allow me to be in overdrive. I was always told to keep the rpms up if hauling in OD

I didnt tow real heavy most of the time, but I would run OD with a built trans when my rpms were over ~1600rpms. Most of the time i would just go by how much it lugged the engine. If it was lugging hard and egts were getting high then it came out of OD, otherwise i ran OD anytime i could.

Same here. I have 4.10's, cruising at 60 mph with a trailer my rpms are at 1900.

this is what i do..

not much to mine, about 400 rwhp if any, and a stock tranny.. i just tow, let it go up to speed on its own, keep revs over 1600, and take it out of overdrive if i saw my rpms down, or too much smoke out the pipe...

That's just it, its a bunch of myths about towing with OD off. T/H mode in my truck doesn't even lock out OD.

I wouldn't pull my old 4000# boat in OD with this auto and 3.73's unless I was doing ~80mph. now with the manual trans, Sure, toss it in 6th and cruise

I pull my 24' enclosed car hauler in OD with my auto and 3:73 no issues at all. I just watch my egt's and if they start to get warm I bring rev's up to spool turbo to cool it down or slow down. Most of the time if I get on the skinny peddle just a little just before the start of a hill my egt's sit between 1100-1250 and my speed stays put.

I won't tow in od unless I am doing 65-70. With 3.73s and 35s it lugs more than I want it to

Tow in OD all the time. If I'm on the highway its OD have had no ill side effects from doing this and I'm usually in the 4-6k weight range.

Every truck will be different because of mods or lack there of. Just make sure you have gauges and drive the truck how it's telling you to. Oh, and no two loads are the same.

I will never run taller gearing than 33s and 3.73s. With that said I have always towed in OD, with my dodge I would shift to OD between 55-60 MPH no matter what the load was and with my Chevy its pretty much the same. Both motors put near 570hp to the rear wheels and both on the same brand/model turbocharger. Both the 48re and the Allison have work done to them. Both only excede 160*F in the pan if ambient temps are over 90*F

same here, if i keep the boost up it pulls any hill. that was with 12-14k toy haulers and a 6%

I have pulled a 7 mile mountain that varies from 8% to 5% grade at 75mph in overdrive with 11k behind me. Pyro was at my personal limit for that duration, but never exceeded 1370*. 3.73's and 33" 19.5 wheels. Rpm running 1900. Water never exceeded 217* and ambient was 80+.
