I want to add an engine heater to my truck. I would like for it to assist in getting the truck warmer quicker. What are the best options??

Many 03-05's came with the block heater, but no cord installed. Go to Carquest. $21 for the cord.

If it's on a Common rail you have to buy the cord to plug it into a standard 110v outlet. One end screws in right beside the oil filter and the other has the male plug end. I bought mine from the dealership years ago but think it was only $25. I can take a picture if you'd like?

Oh, I gotcha. Wonder what the reasoning behind that was?

That's a good question, I've often wondered that myself? The only thing I can figure is for ease of removal in case of damage to the cord, but that's just a stab in the dark. I'm sure someone on here knows the true reason?

From the factory, it is easier to just install the block heater in every engine. Depending on where the engine is going (warm climate/cold climate) they either include the cord or not. Cables are expensive once you start to add up the cost to 100,000 trucks that don't require the cable in a warm climate.

Where would it be? The oil filter is way up the engine . Its the same as my Dad's 03. I wonder what the cord looks like. I have an extra cord or 2 for my 1996 7.3 PSD. Could they be the same?

Not the same.

It's exactly where everyone has told you it is, in the side of the block behind the oil filter, the EXACT same as your Dad's '03. Does your Dad's '03 have a cord? Trace it back.

My understanding is that they ALL did come with the heating element screwed into the driver side of the block

Just purchase the cord, plus "plugs" into the heating element and locks into place with a ring

Make that PASSENGER side and you'd be correct.

No it doesn't have a cord either. The cord looks identical to the one on my 7.3 PSD and the heater does too. Maybe it isn't though. If the orange rubber plug has two pins then it may be the same.

D45 great pics btw... Ive often wondered about the cord myself, great thread btw

sidenote to this thread, not to derail it, but what are those rubber pieces connecting the two hardlines called? if you look at D45 pics you can see what im talking about there is a third one of those towards the back of the block and mine is leaking some antifreeze out of it... hard spot to get to and im not sure what those little rubber hose pieces are called?
