Truckers, lets see your rigs!

Quick question for you guys....wr have a chance to get our 1995 Pete back that we bought brand new. It was a 3406E, but I don't know the serial number prefix. Pretty sure it was a 415 or 435hp. I know hard parts limit the old girl to probably 475hp most likely, but is there anything on the electronic side that is a major limit to power? Can the old 40 pin system run like the newer stuff?

It's going to be a spare for us, more of a toy than a workhorse, but we like power, so we'll have to do something with it.

Didn't want to bother Faulkner directly, so I figured I'd put it here to start.

Chris

Get me the serial number and I will check hard parts, we have an early 435 5EK that has 2 piece pistons in a factory build.

They respond well to the 5DS 600 file, 550 5EK file was written for larger injectors. 475-550 6TS is the same way.

OK. It was "rebuilt" recently with aftermarket parts, so I'm trying to figure out what they used too. Hopefully they went steel top pistons.

I'll bet your dad drove this one before back in the day...we had it from 95-98 when we replaced it with another one just like it.

Thank you, I appreciate it!

It will never run like a 70pin due to the ecm limitations but can make more power than most can work. Friend has one with 58’s, cam and we had to cut some power because it would heat up with his 78mm borg. He put Acert turbos on it last year and helped a ton.

As long as we won't be sick with it versus the other two trucks is all we'll be after. We'll probably use it 10 or 20K miles a year at MOST.

BTW, Any reason you can think that the 6NZ glider you tuned for me would be cutting fuel back now that it's cooling off? Driver is saying it doesn't run quite as strong as it did, and less smoke. Other than the crappy winter blend fuel, does fuel temperature come into play or anything like that? I don't know what electronic reasons there might be.

If we get the 95 back, I'll be in touch!

Anyone here ever run the Cat 795 turbo on their ride? What setup was it and how'd it work?

I’ll say this once... FUC# AN N14.

And you guessed it, because people don’t make wise decisions, it’s been getting low 4’s for fuel mileage.

I like the truck but damn this engine blows.

So bring it up to Ohio to get a custom C18 setup!

I don’t want to sound like I’m picking on you, but how in the world do you only get low 4’s out of it?
My Star with a stock 525hp N14 never once dropped into the 4’s in 3.5 years. I grossed between 84,000 and 90,000 lbs all the time. 7 week average in the summer pulling a 12’9” tall, spread axle Western belt trailer was 5.51mpg, and my 5 week average that winter pulling an 11’6”tall spread axle Western walking floor was 5.78mpg. I had 1 week with the walking floor that was 6.09mpg.
Why is that truck only getting low 4’s?

Part of the issue is probably the truck gearing. An N14 would have never came in a truck with 3.36 and being OTR and running 70mph it’s probably either 1450rpm or 1750rpm. This swap was just a bad decision from the beginning.

The N14 is like the 6NZ and 12.7 S60. Has a cult following that is completely baseless. The N14 just like the others was just an OK engine, not every one lasted forever, got great mileage or was cheap to fix. Not every 12.7 is a 7mpg motor and Detroit parts are not cheap. The 6NZ is probably the most over rated one of them all, they do ok and are mostly good but have their drawbacks.

I have no problem with an N14, we run them a lot in tractors and have had a truck or two with them...but 3.36 gears? No chance in hell. They run fine but have no torque.
