Anything to look out for in particular?

Are the cams the only issues?
 
Yup, cams are the only common major problem with 04-06 unit injection motors.

Avoid the 4 speed auto like the black plague though. The tiptronic 5 speed auto that was an option is actually really good (if you're looking at an auto).

The manuals are of course the most bomb proof option.
 
You should be fine with the cam for an '04. Don't think those problems became huge until the BRM motors in 05.5-06

Listen for a rattle/grinding at idle. That is the Dual Mass Flywheel going out. I'd stay away from any VW auto unless it is the DSG 6 speed, even then I'd try finding a manual. My gf's tdi/dsg does some strange things with the tune we just put on it, but it does haul a lot more ass now :woohoo:
 
How about the clutches? How well do they hold up stock? How many miles should they be replaced at?
