1.6 in 85 Jetta run away damage??

Im looking at buying an 85 Jetta 1.6 diesel. They say it ran away, the driver just got out and "let it blow". The engine still turns over and the owner said he pulled the pan and didnt find any metal.

Thats all I know as I havent went and looked at it.

So what should I look for? Im gonna check compression and see if the turbo seals let oil by to cause the run away. If compression checks out, what could be hurt in the engine??
 
Pistons gonna be hurt too?? Talked more with the current owner, said the timing belt is still on but it looked out of time to him.
 
Depends on how bad the valves floated. Kissed pistons will live to fight another day.
