1st gen Dodge/F550 mashup

This will be a bit of a slow build, since my time, tools and funds are limited.

The plan is to strip away everything but the rolling chassis on a 2009 F550 4x4 from the ZF6 back, and drop an old VE Cummins and 1990 dodge body in its place. Already have the Donor trucks.

So far I have taken off the VE pump and injectors, and they are currently on their way to Giles at performance diesel to get the VE rebuilt and turned up properly on a bench, as well as the nozzles replaced and flow honed 20% over. Enough fuel to feed a compound setup. The goal is a cool and clean 400-450hp, since this truck will see heavy work.

The ZF6 adapter and engine mount adapters are here, just waiting on some funds to get the clutch and flywheel.

Next week I will begin tearing down and parting out all the F550 stuff I won’t need. Will be keeping the radiator, intercooler, fan/shroud, brake and clutch masters, booster, pedal assembly, steering box, batteries, etc. Basically all the ford stuff needed to operate the rolling chassis. The intercooler and radiator are much better than what an old 1st gen ever had, so those will be modified to fit, along with the fan and shroud. The F550 also has a belt driven compressor which I will attempt to fit, and would like to try getting the ford AC system modified to fit the Cummins too….we’ll see.

I also have an old Hiab knuckle crane that will be going on, and will build a dumping flat deck to finish it all off.

It will be rolling on the duallies for a bit, before I get the funds together for some super single wheels from 1st attack, and some nice Goodyear G275’s. To clear these I will be stretching and modifying some old 1st gen dually fenders to put in the front.

The plan is to have a drivable truck before winter in 4-5 months. It won’t be finished, but it needs to be able to drive by than.

Not much to see yet picture wise aside from a dirty torn apart Cummins and F550, but they will be coming in hot soon enough, once I figure out photobucket. (Pay)
 
Few uninteresting pictures. Just picked up an s475 to add to the collection of parts. Dieselpowersource is on back order for the hotpipe I need from the he351cw to the s475. Once that comes in I can start mocking up the compounds. Will just be tearing apart the f550 for now.

Am a fan of keep it simple stupid, live my life by it, so why not build a truck around it. ? These old VE Cummins are about as simple as it gets, and paired with a strong as nails drivetrain, I figure I can’t go wrong.
 
Well, 20 years of trusting people and having good results, till a couple weeks ago when I got done over on the s475. Word from the now wiser, don’t e-transfer to strangers, use something with buyers protection like PayPal.

Ended up going a bit different route for the compounds, instead of an s475 with a .90 a/r turbine housing like I had planned before donating money to some pos, I grabbed a hx55w with a 19cm turbine housing off ebay. Should make for a nice quick spooling set up for this old VE 12 valve. Need all my air quick since the VE starts defuelling at 2500rpm.

I don't think the 475 would have worked well with a VE anyway. They don't light until about 26-2700 LOL. Unless you were going to use it in a set of twins!
 
That’s exactly what it was going to be for, compounds=twins. He351cw/s475 with .90 a/r T6 housing for quick spooling. Now a hx55w instead, little less air, but won’t need it.

If it's going to be a work truck like you say i'd seriously reconsider those turbo choice's
The 351 is a good turbo but that 9cm housing bottle necks pretty fast
A set of towing compounds like a K27 and 369SX-E are a great combo for spooling low and still making good power, over 650 hp with a p pump.
Since your using the dodge cab just stay with the dodge compressor, it will fit in beside the frame rail
What gear does that chassis have, mine was originally 4.88's and was pretty gear bound until I swapped them for a taller gear, the big tires you plan to use will help

I am enjoying my 351/HT60 compounds, 215 pump with 5 speed. I lost a little under 1400 compared to HX35 and less timing, but right at 1400 it all works nicely. I daily drive and pull a 28' camper with a 1500lb side by side in the bed and it does great. Drive pressure stays under 70 lbs and making about 55lbs total boost now, ported the wastegate to 1" and I have a spring gate set to 28-30 psi for best drive pressure. I had it set tighter to break 60lbs total but drive pressure would get high, about 90lbs. I recommend for a budget twins set.

Well my goals are for 400hp on fuel, so I don’t foresee any problems with the smaller 9cm turbine, especially with the wastegate drill out. The hx55w is a 19cm turbine which is tighter than most too, but my fuel goes down by 2500rpm with the VE, which is why I am trying to keep everything tight so that I can use the narrow fuelling band on this old IP. Two wastegates in the system should keep drive pressures manageable, especially at my lower hp range. And for heat, if I ever should experience it while towing, a water/meth injection system will be used.

Truck has 4.88 gears, but with 42” tires it should be a nice combination.
 
Well, it was about as redneck as yea get, but the 6.4 is out of its tight ass home. Was nice to not have to care about anything, and just cut or break it out ?

Also got the hx55w in. A little comparison beside the tiny little stock h1c.
