I have an 89 head and have a 96 head. Which is the better to use?

The 96 has less chance of cracking around the injector hole.
Just for that fact, it gets my vote as "better".

I agree with Mark...and the fact that your choice on injectors is greater with the 96 - 7mm then the 89 - 9mm units.
