BMW 335d 11.84 at 119mph!

I know there have been a lot of VW TDI CP4 failures that did indeed take out the rest of the fuel system. I do not know if the lines/filters are configured the same in the truck applications or not, but in the TDI world there are a lot of documented failures of the HPFP which is the CP4 on the '09+ CR TDI engines.

It would be cool to drop a deleted 335d engine into my old '90 BMW 535i. I wonder where I could find an engine and for how much, and what would it take to get it to work in the older chassis???

My wife's X5D runs fine, had the typical emissions trip to the dealer under warranty but it's now out and I'm looking at deleting everything so I don't have to worry with it. Outside of that it's been great. Big scheme of things it was just sensors and crap, no mechanical failures.

I also drive the **** out of it since she drives like a grandma

That is probably the key to avoiding the carbon build up problems. Seems to be effecting more low mileage cars than high mileage ones so they probably don't get up to temp to burn the crud off...

I wonder where I could find an engine and for how much

All Foreign Auto Parts in Pittsburg, PA found mine. I was getting desperate to find a couple of them so I didn't bother arguing with the price tag. Granted these babies were guaranteed to be good and both had the complete engine harness as requested. Be prepared to pay north of $5k/engine. A BMW reman sells for a little over 15k.

I joined Co-Part and bid on a 335D with water damage. I quit bidding at $6,500 and the car eventually sold for over $15k.

From what my little research turned up on the CP4.2, they have roller tipped plungers and the BMW application has two pistons compared to the CP3 which has three pistons. The CP4.2 also has to be phased timed. On the bright side, I read they take 20% less power to turn.

I went with the simplicity of the mechanical A-pump. With my power goals, the BMW common rail stuff would not suffice. Additionally, after adding up all the costs, with stand alone programmer, hopped up CP4.2, injector mods, and the fear that the timing chain could still fail, I decided to go mechanical.

I read some on the carbon issue. It is mostly typical emission problems. You draw oil mist from the crankcase and introduce it into the induction stream and somewhere down the line dump in hot exhaust gasses. Ergo... the dreaded 'carbon buildup'.

Check out one of the forums mentioned earlier. There is a European company the can take the ECM and reprogram for deletes and what not.

I've seen CP3's take out injectors, but they were of questionable health and not something I'd install personally.

We live in the information age... bad news travels fast... we also live in the technology age... parts is expensive :( :( :(

a small percentage of all makes suffer pump/fuel system failures. I've heard it about Fords, Duramaxes, Cummins, euro diesels, direct injected gas vehicles, etc.

But that very small percentage makes up a very large percentage of water cooler level automotive discussion, and the high price tags of the repairs sends people running to the internet to tell the world how fragile the entire line of vehicles is because their dream truck/car/etc. is currently at the dealer getting "$20,000 worth of" ;) warranty work.

These modern vehicles are awesome these days. Research your purchase thoroughly, particularly when buying used (I prefer private party, original owner, etc.).

If you do your due diligence, odds are VERY high that you'll end up with a solid, trouble-free vehicle

sorry for the lack of doom and gloom

I don't think it's doom and gloom, just a thing of odds. I know the early cp4's in Duramax's have problems, so why take the chance when there are so many options. It's not like it hasn't been improved upon since.

Oh I hear you, OEM's continue to make revisions on good platforms making them better and better. And certain generations are certainly more prone to failure.

I build the dpf delete pipes for the U.S. Spec 335d, I'm working with a tuner from Toronto and currently building the transmission and have hybrid turbos waiting to bolt on..
Gotta finish a vw head gasket job and some duramax injectors for my brother and then I'll have time to work on my car again.. I know the guy with the 11.85 second run.. He's since changed his tune to the same one i run from Canada..if anyone would like to contact me my email is nastydiesel@gmail.com I've had my car up to 170
Mph from a dig.. Within 3/4-1 mile..
So smooth

Old single turbo version just made 400 hp and 1000 Nm of torque, under 4000 rpm and still VGT Garrett. Also stock injectors I think.

What was that? A 330d from Europe? What we've discovered in BMW world is that Europeans will dyno a car and measure hp at the wheels then convert those numbers to flywheel numbers.. Their dyno machines automatically do this.. I would be very weary of any numbers or data supplied by a European source.. They have also proven to me over the last year that their business practices/customer service don't compare to most vendors here in the states... Lots of scams coming from UK between engine tuning and transmission tuning for these cars. My low pressure turbo now has an hx-35 compressor wheel.. We'll see what kind of power these things will make soon when I finish my trans and bolt my turbos on

And we never believe US hp numbers, they are always very inflated..

Yes it was flywheel hp, thats what factory is giving you also. Actual number was 416 hp so calculate wheel hp from that. Ported head and stiffer valve springs because originals start to float very early with high boost.

You can say what you want but you still haven't proven that the numbers are inflated.

Drag racers have bought gasoline race engines from famous US engine builders, when they were dynoed in Sweden they had lost 200-300 hp from what original dyno sheet said. Aeromotive sells fuelpumps that are said to be good for example 1500 hp but they barely do 1000, many burnt engines because of them. And so on and so on..

Then there are these big rig dyno days..

Hey I've never over inflated my numbers.. With dpf delete pipe and tune I made 350 hp and 520 ft-lbs of torque at the hubs.. Wheels removed. 'Murica
