check eng light came on with the instal of a ehx. what would cause that

Insufficient flow through the EGR. You'll either need a tuner that eliminates EGR codes or a "finger stick" if your not planning on a tuner.

Have a parts house pull the code, should be a P0401 "egr flow insufficient"
