This is the first Dana 80 I have done. I cannot find any patterns in the service manual that tells me how close or far off I am. Here is the drive side.

I set the pinion depth up with a 1-2-3 block and have .007" backlash. I thought it looks way off too, but do not know what I need to do to correct it.

First of all this pic is the drive side and your first pic is the coast side.

Anyhow your pinion is too close start by removing .020-.030" and see what happens. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jason. I may have gotten the pics messed up when downloading them. I will let you know how it goes.

Your pattern should kinda look like a rectangle or a parallelogram on both sides of the tooth and be towards the center of the tooth, or a little lower on the tooth. If its a little low on the tooth, it will get better as the backlash loosens up. Backlash should be 5-9, I would always like to see them closer to 5 cause they will always loosen up over time.
