So,I have an 02 24v with a p pump. I bought the truck with the pump already on it. I love it, and it's always run and driven beautiful! Well,a few days ago,I was cruising along, and the governor flew apart, and busted the gov housing. So,I pulled it, and had a local guy rebuild the governor, and put it back together. Now, I can't it to run right. I have set the timing twice, to what I thought was 24*, but, when it starts, it blows an enormous amount of white smoke, and smells like raw fuel! The only thing that I know of that changed in the pump, was a set of 191 dv's. The mods are as follows;

160hp p pump, 191's, 4,000 gsk, mack rack plug, no plate, afc mods, 200hp injectors, fass 150gph titanium lift pump, s366 turbo, that gets me about 65psi, ptc triple disk billet converter, and all red eagle trans.

It ran so good before, I'm hoping it may be as simple as the timing being retarded.

How are you setting the timing?

It's the timing. Good luck. Read up there is plenty of info on how to time it if you search. Use drop valve method to find TDC and go from there.

I rotated the motor, till both valves were closed, and pulled the injector, and stick a rod in there. Rotated it and made a mark in both directions, when the piston started to drop, and then marked it in the middle, for tdc. The pump,I rotated the motor, with an indicator on the #1 plunger, watched it drop, and when it stopped, zeroed the indicator and then busted the pump gear loose. Then rotated the motor back to my tdc mark, and then tightened the gear back up.

And am I right in thinking it would be retarded?

You need to set the plunger in the pump at a set number not bottom it out. Google the p pump timing chart.

I only bottomed the #1 plunger out, to zero the indicator. Then, I went by the chart, and went to, .244 of plunger lift. Is that not correct? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I know what I did!I don't know why,but, I think what I did, is this. I was rolling the pump, by the crank, in reverse, to bottom the plunger out. When I zeroed the indicator out, and got back under the truck, I'm almost positive when I turned it according to the chart, I'm pretty sure I rotated it forward! Which would regard the pump! Right?

Yep the would be 24 degrees retarded. Pretty easy mistake to make your first time honestly.

Well, maybe I shouldn't admit it, lol, but, it's not my first time. It has been a while,I guess I just got in a hurry, and wasn't thinking.

So, what are y'alls preferred methods? Rolling the motor forward, till it bottoms out, and then forward more? Or, starting by rolling the motor backwards?

Doesn't matter which direction you go to get to the base circle on the pump. You just have to turn it clockwise when you go from base circle to desired plunger lift. Then you can turn the the engine in any direction to get back to #1 compression TDC. Just make sure you you are going clockwise when you stop on the mark to remove the lash in the gears.
