Other than the shift tower configuration is there any difference between the 12 valve and 24 valve shift tower? Is one better than the other? And are they interchangeable?
 
no just the towers r different internals r the same ans they both hold the same power
 
It's not really a 12v-24v split, it's a 97 older and 98 newer thing.

I put a 97 and older trans in my 98 12 valve that had the round top cover, so I swapped on the original square top.
 
The '98+ has a much tighter feel. You can also get the short shift for the newer ones, can't for the older ones.

I did it to mine. One of the best mods I've done. Much tighter pattern.

You will need everything from the top cover up. Shifter and all. The shifter boot won't fit the small shifter. I took an old shifter knob, cut the top of it off and took the metal insert out, flipped it upside down and put it over the shifter under the boot. Worked pretty well.

I did it to my 97 a few months after I bought it back in 2002. Just like Scott said one of the BEST mod's I ever did to the truck! Scott is also right about the shifter boot not fitting, I on the other hand just lived it.
