I'm looking to build a set of sled stops for my 96 and was wondering what material to use. Should I use square tubing or round, how thick, and what size 1inch, 1and a half,2inch? Any help would be awesome

I welded reece receivers to my hitch and built some L shaped square tube pieces that slid in.
They worked pretty good.

Unfortunately I tested my sled stops last year and found out the hard way they weren't gonna work. I had them welded to the hitch and it peeled the hitch down and ripped the bolt holes out of the hitch. Not one of my brighter moves. They now are attached to the frame with 2" tube .250 thick.

Not one of my finer moments, used to have 1" square stock for stops and it snapped them like twigs!

I've seen quite a few with really little stops. Always thought to myself, I hope he doesn't expect those to last long. My 2" square ones took a pretty good hit and a lot of me pushing the truck around with a tractor.

I made a set this winter. Used .250 wall square tubing. Added a little flavor.
I actually used them the first time out this year. Clutch was still grabbing in reverse and hit the sled.

I saw a strong set bolted to the frame and when the truck broke the rear end and the sled hit it. It bent the frame. Just something to think about when your building em

Yup, I have had guys bend the frame also. Had one with them clamped to the receiver and the frame bent where the receiver was bolted on, not a lot you can do at that point. If it's a dedicated puller then correct mounting to the frame will take care of most of it. If it's a street truck there will have to be some compromises.

its just a play toy for now kinda of street/ bar hopper/ puller until funds allow but thanks for the info guys

Something else to consider is they are like a cheap roll cage too. Even if they only last one time they were worth it. Granted if they fail so bad the first time and still allow the sled to hit the truck then that is no good. But if they keep the truck safe for another pull then you did something right.
