If it was just a ring then I wouldnt have to cut it in half. Just push it in there flush and run screws through the inside of the ring into the box.

Thats going to leak something aweful. If you build the ring oversized, cut it in half, and set the ring under the face, it would seal better and then you can drill the box and hold the ring up with drywall screws.
