  • are you trying to et 5 in? Probably not possible with thick clutches, as it's not that easy with thin ones. I think is best to 1st asemble tranny and get clearance at .005 to .010 on intermediate and .025 to .030 overall. Go here: http://www.atsdiesel.com/PDF/47RE_Overhaul_Instructions_A1.pdf.
    Forward:
    o 5 Clutches
    o 4 Steels .070
o Top pressure plate machined step .120
o Bottom plate machined flat .410
    o Clutch clearance .025
Personally, I don't think that's enough clearance. I go .030 on four and we have four holding on over 1,000 hp trucks. Sure five is even better if done right, but it's tricky. Do you have a Daco out there??
the kit i got has the.070 koleens but came with .090 altos... just trying to figure out my forward pack to properly keep clearance and make sure they dont slip off splines
Probably the answer is:: yes you can and must machine bottom plate in forward(rear) drum to get 5 in. Use .070 kolenes and thin clutches. No to drilling direct, unless hi pressure and transbrake. My opinion.
