01 hard start, dies when stopped

A buddy of mine has an 01 5 speed that he bought as a repo. You have to crank on it 3 times before it will start or you can roll start it right off. We were going to replace the lift pump but it appears to be brand new.. He said he can also drive it for a good while on the interstate an come to a stop an it will die but will start right back up. The truck is bone stock and I'm going to try to put a fuel pressure gauge on it this weekend
 
sounds like a FP problem or the vp electronics may be worn as a result of low FP
 
Check for error codes and fuel pressure... Report back your findings... As for the fuel pressure you need both ilde and WOT (at highway speed). Just because you got good idle pressure means nothing like this fellow learned...
