I am still pretty new to the diesel stuff. I always thought they were just noisy. A buddy told me heard a knock or rattle. After listening, sounds maybe like a lifter noise or maybe a flex plate. i don't know any ideas or has someone experienced a similar problem.:bang:ft::st:
 
my brothers 03 made a similar noise for nearly a yr. til we figured out that one of the valve seats has dropped and been pressed sidways causing the noise.

are the valves moderatly easy to get to, i figure i can pull the Valve Cover check the adjustment and take a look and see.
 
post a sound clip. If it's a tapping sound, it could be the valve lash. If its more of a hollow knocking sound, it could be a noisy CP3.

Look around at the forum....You'll notice MANY threads about noises and suspected causes!!!
 
How does the exhaust tone sound? If it seems kind of hollow, it may be a valve seat has dropped. You can pull the valve cover and check lash. One rocker may be looser than the others. If so, confirmed dropped valve seat.
 
wouldnt there be some sort of performance problem noticed, other than being bone stock. the truck does not seem to be lacking power. im getting 18mpg on average??????????????????
 
you very well could just be used to the way a gasser sounds. If trying to compare to a gasser, your truck will definitely sound like it's got problems... fuel knock, valve lash. Just like tuning your ear to a gasser, you have to for a diesel.
 
Triton brings up a good point. Try listening to another 03-04. Mine is very quite. To the unknowledgible, they think that it is a gas truck (debadged). Only made noise when valve seat dropped. Slight ticking began and exhaust tone changed. 03's are prone to seat dropping. You say it is stock? On 4 valves one dropped seat will not change power output by alot. It may run for a long time by having seat ride on valve. Or it could cock sideways and trash something.
