10.5 sterling adjustments

hey peeps i've got the 10.5 in my truck and a bad u-joint to be fixed but i also noted some play in the pinion shaft. the seal is not leaking but there is some play in all 3 directions. and a small amount of backlash in the gears. does anyone know if the pinion nut can just be taken up to reduce the slop in it and how hard is it to remove backlash in the pinion to crown. Thankx.....

unless some one put it together with shims, there should be a crush sleeve in it so yes you can tighten it down a little to take the play out of the pinion bearing but it you go to much it will burn up the bearings. you may want to check to make sure there isn't any metal in the oil first, you could have a bearing going out
