10k grease bath trailer axles.

So I have a olderish gooseneck trailer with supposedly two 10k trailer axles. I know they are minimum 9k axles because they did used to have duals on them and the hubs are wide enough for until dot kept throwing a fit so they got switched to singles. These axles desperately need repacked so I plan on doing that soon after I finish up a couple more pressing projects but I can't seem to find grease seals for them at all. All I can find is oil bath seals and hubs with threaded caps and mine are the press on. I really don't want to make the switch between how expensive the hubs are and the trailer doesn't get towed enough so I worry about losing oil and roasting a spindle. Does anyone know where I can find some or what I need to be looking for?
 
ive seen oil bath paced like a reg grease axle....just packed am and sealed em with the oil bath caps...ive seen thsi stuff posted on hotshot sites

Yeah I'm more worried about getting bearings if they are different between the two. The seals have leaked water in for sure because the grease has milked and what I can see so far has rust but the hubs never got hot when I did a 2hr trip with a 3k lb truck.1000002420.jpg
 
I had 2 hubs on my trailer that would leak oil, and I replaced the seals and they still leaked.

I just packed them all with grease and screw the cap back on. Bearings and the seals were the same. Never had a problem after switching to grease.

Good to know I guess I will just make sure everything is measured so I get the right sizes. Clearly water has gotten in but I'm not quite sure how because it's a flat deck but it did sit for several years untouched. The brakes on the front axle don't appear to work even though I have continuity through the whole truck and trailer and the rear isn't hooked up from what I have messed around with on it so I'm hoping nothing is wrong, I'd rather avoid having to spend much more than seals and grease just looking at brake parts and bearings makes my wallet hurt.
 
My 10K oil bath axles all leaked and ruined all the brake pads. I had a local trailer shop put all new seals in them and pack them with grease. No more leak. If a trailer was up and down the road all the time, I'd have stayed oil. For a trailer that sets more than it's pulled, grease is the way to go IMO. You can use all the same parts.

Ok good to know I will just have to measure the seals to make sure I get the right ones when I go to repack the bearings and I'm hoping they don't need replaced. And this trailer will max see 4k miles in the next 4 years. I've also been debating the question of whether or not to switch to duals since I'm doing personal use but I've found some 16ply trailer tires when I was pricing them out that are rated at 4k on a single setup so I'm probably going to stick with singles and just pick up a spare to keep with the trailer. My dually isn't rated to tow 20k and I'm still unsure if I can get the neck to clear the dump bed on my c50 to reach the gooseneck hitch on the frame and everything seems to need tires these days.

Laws around here aren't written with any kind of sense regarding trailers and ratings. The fact that a weights and measures trooper can see a dual tandem trailer and already know it is overweight for a normal 1-ton rating before even stopping it is absurd. For me, I'd rather have folks run dual tandems and have twice the tires under their trailer and a pair of 10K axles with larger brakes when only towing a small car or anything. The laws should be written such that if you get stopped, weighed, and you are actual over the ratings, then you get at ticket. This bull **** of just because its a dual tandem you have to have licenses and all that bull **** is stupid. If you want to buy a dual tandem and you never weight over 26,000....then get after it.

I have a farm plated truck and a DOT registry for the farm so I can legally tow any trailer, be over-weight, over-height, and over-width, and there ain't anything they can do about it. As long as I display DOT no. on the door, have a fire extinguisher, and have hazard triangles to place on the road during trouble, those are my only requirements other than standard safety chains and all that bs. It's absolutely ridiculous that the lasws are written to the ratings and not the actual weights.

Good luck! Personally, I'd rather have twice the tire than I need. They will run cooler and if you blow one, take that rim off and keep rolling.

No ****. Seriously though, what would you rather have on the road, a trailer rated for 30K only hauling a go-cart that is under the max towing cap of the truck towing it, or a single wheel tandem gooseneck that is 30 ft long hauling a 4430? Such bull ****.

Another bull **** item for Oklahoma. I can hook my 30' dual tandem trailer to the truck and haul a rocking chair for my elderly neighbor as long as I don't charge her for it...legally....but if I put one small square bale of hay on it and deliver it for my farm I need to run placards and all that ****. It's nothing but a money grab. I has zero to do with keeping the roads safe and looking out for our kids driving to school.

You preachin to the choir brother. I put 12 plies on my boat trailer. I’ve never understood trailer tires being right at the limit. Yall boys ever owned a camper? You can’t leave you’re dirty underwear and a beer can inside or them mf’s will pop a tire.

Everything in this country that has the word safety attached to it is nothing but a racket.

My main thing is just to get 5 tires so that's all 4 and a spare it will costs me about 750 dollars before mounting for 16 ply tires rated at 4400lbs a piece. If I want duals and run 14 ply or even 12 ply then I have to buy new to me rims and twice as many tires. Im currently in college and have several projects going so extra money for tires is not something I have laying around even though yes duals are arguably safer. And yes dot around here in Oklahoma is full of **** especially because the truck itself gross combined weight rating is 22k so it's under the legal limit dot will freak out over duals on the trailer if I want to make money though.

Currently going to TCC for mechanical engineering and going to transfer to osu. Main reasons for staying near Tulsa is so I can stay home to work on everything and save some money for projects and school. I've spent hours scouring the Internet for rules the past couple years when figuring out what I can legally do with my dump truck once it's done and whatnot and it seems to keep leading back to getting a CDL which is not cheap.

Excellent! I graduated with EET from OSU waaaaaaay back in 1997 and still work in Stillwater. Next time we have a Comp D get-together, I'll have to holler at ya.

Yeah, I'm going to upgrade the wife's camper to 16" so I can not worry about it...I've been kicking around the idea of swapping it to 8 lug oil bath axles with disc brakes just because then it's the same as our heavy bumper pull trailer. Yeah, don't need it on a 10K lb camper, but I prefer overkill to overload

We went to 18 ply 17.5's on the last GN and I'll never own anything less again...we may run it a bit heavier than we should though.
