12 valve vs. P pumped 24v

Hey guys, my truck has 314k miles on it, and I have been toying around with the idea of putting a 12 valve in it, or P-pumping the current 24 valve that is in it.
Here is the scenerio:

Which ever engine I decide to do is going to get an overhaul:
New Rings
Bearings
seals/gaskets
etc.

They would have the same pump (which ever I find a decent deal on)

But as far as making the most power, reliability etc etc... What is better? A 12 valve or a 24 valve if the 24 is p-pumped?

Just starting to get ideas and I sort of want to build a stout street truck that I might use at local pulls a couple times a year.

Thanks alot!!:charger:

Friday night is kinda slow around here... Not real sure why:D

FWIW I wanna build a p pumped 24v after I finish the Mail Jeep...

in theory the 24v head stock should make more power than the 12v stock head... then you modify then it all goes out the window. good luck its a good question

24 valve, head will flow more. Might as well not waste money on another engine your gonna build, when you can use the one you have. Use the money you save to make it even badder than you wanted to in the first place.

That is exactly what I am thinking. I am 99% sure it is not a 53 block so that is good, or atleast I couldnt find the number. If it does end up being a 53 and it hasnt cracked by now (314k miles) i doubt it would crack later.

So what exactly are the benefits of a 24 valve over a 12 valve assuming the 24 valve is setup with a P-pump?

So a 24v head will flow more? What about with bigger valves in the 12v? With a cutoff intake and lots of porting?

Stock vs. stock it will flow more, but there are lots of other variables...

Core engines can be had cheap. Especially if you want to part out a truck...

Here are the things I think of: My head flows 214 intake and 195 (I think) exhaust, the valve train is much more stable, especially at RPM but like I said I'm bias, there are some screaming P-Pump trucks.

Well if I am going to be doing an overhaul on the engine, I want to make sure that it is the best engine to put in my truck. I don't want to waste money on a engine, when in the future I wish I had the other engine.

The cost of P-pumping the 24 valve VS. swapping a 12 valve in shouldnt be too different if you factor in selling the 24 valve once the the 12 valve is ready to go in.

In the end, money not being a factor..... 12 valve or P-Pumped 24 valve.

This will be for a street truck, it will not have any larger than a 66/71/14 turbo on it and will still have the 5spd. I do not plan on doing head porting, but more than likely will be studding it, and maybe an aftermarket cam.

Well I have never ported a head before, so I would hate to mess anything up. I am also a college student so I am scraping the money together just to do the swap haha

So we have a couple votes to do the 12 valve swap. Maybe I will turn this into a Poll thread

I'm gonna P-pump mine. If you already have alot of stuff done to your 24v there is really no sense in starting over on a 12v. Some of the stuff will change over and some wont.

Well I really dont have anything major done to my 24 valve that wont switch over, I think the only thing that wont switch over would be the Haisley injectors, exhaust manifold.

Now if I p-pump my truck I can sell my VP-44 pump and Adrenaline w/pulse to help fund some of the build.

I just want to make sure that since the engine is going to be out anyways, that I put the best possible engine in there, which is why I ask what engine is better 12 or 24 valve.

If you are going mild to mid range, the p-pump conversion is fine. Injectors are the holdup if you want over mid 800's. I'm thinking about building a 12V for mine, but my 24V has less than 80k miles and i hate to get rid of it. I'm hoping the new head from Hamilton comes out next summer. That would be a great reason to do a 12V.

When I was in college (12 years ago) I was glad to scrape up enough money for diesel. Could be you party less than I did. h:rockwoot::rockwoot:
