we have a 98 ford ryder truck on the farm we put a flatbed on to haul hay. has a 12v 175 p-pump. lots of power but truck is too light for 10 ton of hay. might use the motor to put in another ford crewcab. block has a cast rear oil drain like a 24v but its cast solid, not just plugged. has #s 21h6 or 2Ih6 under vacuum pump. under the oil filter it has ah-ph seen this on other blocks. only concern i have is under th alternator it has a small 1/2 inch tall 53 cast under a small dails or clock symbol. i doubt its a "53" block but want to be sure. cuold try and get pics if needed. thanks for any info.

I have a 98 12v which is a 53 it's larger than a 1/2" tall. Not all "53" blocks were bad mine has no flaws in it and I hope it stays that way..............knock on wood.

I've run (2) 53 12V motors and have zero issues with them, both are storm blocks.

as far as i know all 53 blocks are storm and i parted a 98 12v auto a year or so back had 670k on it all was fine.

What does "storm block" mean?Is it just because of them being prone to leaking??

STORM is in reference to the thread ports in the block.

Before that it was pipe thread...

or at a glance has two turbo oil drains and block heater threads in not in a freeze plug like earlier 12v blocks.

ok, thanks. heres a twist- this block has the same block heater in the freeze plug like earlier 12v. freeze plug is 2 1/4" size same as 1st gen plug ! i thought 24 v had smaller freeze plugs? dont have a 24v block in the shop to compare too, sold it last week. can anyone verify 1st hand a 12v block cracking?

Thanks for clearing that up for me,guys! But when I here storm and 53 block I only think of leaking blocks:doh:

i've seen 7 or 8 12 valve 53 blocks, all of them over 200k, and none of them cracked

i had about 220k on mine when it cracked. mine cracked the #2 cylinder from top to bottom, it was in a 99 24v.

I know of one guy that has a '97 12v, it's came factory with a 53 block...it cracked.
