.050 over or .5mm/.020 over? Should that part number be 286031?

.50 is 1/2mm, or .020" (Twenty Thousandths) of an inch.
Cummins has 7 digits in their part number, so 2860312 is the correct length for a Cummins number.

That ain't no Cummins number. Maybe Clevite, or Mahle with one too many numbers.
I don't think .050" o/s pistons exist.

I said Cummins has 7 digits, but I didn't say it WAS a Cummins number.
The ".050" I believe is a typo on the OP's part, I think they are ".50" or Twenty Thousandths over size.

Cummins over sized pistons are usually .020 (.50mm) or .040 (1.0mm) over.

Rod bearings can be .25mm (.010"), .50 (.020") .75mm (.030") or 1.0mm (.040") under sized.

I believe Cummins will also sell rod bearings with the rod side in various over sizes, for certain engines with fractured cap rods.
I can't believe anyone would be desperate enough to save a cracker rod, though. :D

286031 is a .010 reduced compression height variant of the 286030 Mahle, which is one of the 4 bowl designs once available similar to what most would refer to as "intercooled 12v bowls".

That is correct.
