I have the opportunity to buy a Freightliner FL60 with a p-pumped 8.3 and a 7speed manual tranny. I would like to get some general thoughts from you guys that know what you are talking about. The truck peaked my interest becuase a recon it would be easy to turn the thing up, although I am not sure how the rest of the truck would appreciate that. I think it makes around 200 horse the way it sits now and has around 75k miles.

Also on a side note, what are the Gross weights on a rig like this?

Thanks,
Andy

The 7 speed would likely take sliding the fuel plate, but may not take to a #0 or 100 plate. Driving habits largely dictate wheather the drive train will live. The FL's are shakey, and rattly in the cab, but at that age, they all will. And, 200hp is pretty weak for an 8.3, you'll have to slide the plate just to tolerate driving it.

i just put a p-pump 8.3 into my buddys fl60. it had a 5.9 24valve in it. we kept the 6 speed the 5.9 was running. the 8.3 was out of an ambulance and i think the tag said 280hp. i slid the stock plate all the way forward from the stock midway position, stretched the overflow and put washers in the stock gov springs. it has the 8 blade 58mm hx 40 on it. the truck runs!!! he is registered at 54,999 and weighs about 45-50k most of the time traveling the east coast. we have not put any guages on the motor yet to see the egt-boost because there was not any time at the install(had to be back on the road asap)

he is averageing 8.5-9.5 mpg on the hwy and can keep up with any truck up any hill. with a new airfilter in the stock box it is pulling about 8in of vacume. needs some kind of better filter design.

if there are any ? you have feel free to pm me

That mpg is great! My work truck, a 2007 IH with a 300hp DT466 gets 4.4 mpg on a tankful avg. It has the same 54999 gross.
My idea on a better air intake system, would be to snag one at a truck bone yard from a FL 70 or bigger with 350+ hp rating.
