I have a 89 5.9
got it mocked up, fitted and running
Like my other post "Out Of Time"

The tracks have closed for the season, missed it by a few days, due to weather,
to get to make a base run to see what it would do.
Rather than wait til Feb.
Am going to pull the engine back out
I'm going to pull the head,> port it, 60 lbs springs
shorten the depth, and widen the oil pan sump

So since the engine is head-less and pan-less

Thoughts turned to increasing compression
If I'm "Out There"
let me know

haven't calculated how much yet,
to remove from the deck, pistons, etc, until i have the head off

the plan is

Deck the block,
mill the pistons > to get back needed head, and valve clearance
balance engine
shim the injectors ( distance that the block was decked, so that they still spray in the same spot, in the bowl as before the machining

basically, just moving the bowl up, to gain compression

I have the time and machinery, except for balancing the crank

What do you think>.

I'm thinking more compression> less timing

I'd leave it alone....I'd probably o-ring or fire-ring the head since it's off, but that's it. A lot of really high hp guys drop compression rather than raise it. With a diesel, you can always add more boost!
 
Eric Gilbert at the hungry diesel upped the compression with his ramchargers new engine. He ended up at 18.25:1 compression with something similar to a 188/220, and a 24v head. I'm not positive where he has his timing, but he's said it's very responsive.

I'm going to do the same with my ve 24v. Though I think I'll use a smaller cam

Get with Zach Hamilton.

He loves high compression. has a different sound completely to it.. he can for sure help you with finer points abd what to look out for.
 
I tried 19.1 years ago and didn't like it , good low mid range but gave up top end power .
 
Definitely need a wife spray angle and a way to get rate up of fuel injected...
To minimize burn length time..

Like I said..
Hamilton it's the only one I have known to run 21 to1 comp..
I am kicking 17.5 or so around and it runs rather well
 
All right rivi. What's up with this wife spray pattern secret squirrel stuff??? LOL
