I bought an 01 4x4 dually.

Prior owner replaced alternator as he thought that was the issue. The truck will charge fine for 5 minutes or so then completely stops charging.

My question is this a pcm or ecm issue? This is my first 24v and not real up on 24v issues.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,Jess

Possibly ECM, did you check it with a volt meter or is it just the gauge on the dash dropping.

ya checked it, plus its draining the batteries all the way down while driving.

The ecm does control charging correct not the pcm?

The ECM on the motor. The PCM is for transmission and drivetrain. Most guys have alternator issues and get funny readings in the ECM if your plug a reader into the OBDII port with a good style scan tool. Mine acted up and was getting weird readings and my ECM went haywire.

Pcm controls the alternator.

I see now that the PCM has regulator control but the ECM has a battery input voltage and if its wrong you'll get funny things. That was my issue and I know there have been others. Searches the forums some more and guys were replacing the PCM and having same problems. Did find someone has a external conversion for a voltage regulator setup but never found the picture or diagram. It's supposed to be on the TDR forum I guess.
