2002 7.3l tranny temp ?

What should tranny temp be ? Was reading 250F at 70mph.(unloaded) Truck is 2002 , 2wd , x-cab , long box. Father in law just bought it , and I know my 6.0l runs alot cooler.
 
Yeah. Thats pretty hot. Somethings not right. I know when my converter was going out. It was cooking.
 
The dash gauge reads midway , but the Autometer shows almost 250f. I'm thinking maybe the sending unit is fubar ?
 
could be a possibility.. you can hit the pan with an infrared gun to get an idea of what it is actually reading...
 
The dash gauges are poop. They go to the middle and stay about any temp. But that is also a possiblity that the sending unit is bad. Does it go to 250 immediatly or does it gradually rise?
 
If its overfilled it will read hot if you using the usual side port for you tranny probe.
 
I'll have to ask how fast it comes up and get him to check the level.
