I'm looking for a Cummins engine to swap into my Excursion. Locally I located a 2002 24v that needs a rebuild. 210k miles, was still being run in a hot shot truck, used a quart of oil every 200 miles, no knocks, didn't miss or run hot, complete except for some of the front end accessories and lift pump used on the replacement engine. The injector pump, lines, injectors are all still there.
I'm not at all afraid of rebuilding the engine myself, but what should I look for on the 24v engine before I buy one? Would this be a 53 block? If so, is it a deal breaker? What else? Is it worth the $600 he's asking for it?
 
It is worth it for the pump and block alone.

I'm a little concerned about the 02 ECM though. I'm not an electronics guru, but I do know for certain that the 02 truck's cruise control was electronically controlled. I don't know if that is in the ECM or the PCM, but you will probably want to make sure you get both...

The other option is to P-pump the 24v. If you have the money to do that up front, I think you will be much happier with the results.. and it should reduce the amount of electonrics you have to fight with down the road.
 
Thanks. I hadn't thought about changing pumps. What would be the advantages of a P-pumped 24v over a P-pumped 12v?
 
Less adjustability and smoke control. Are you building a daily driver or a wannabe sled puller?
 
you can make a great/mild daily driver out of a p-pumped truck! with the right tuning, injectors, afc adjustment etc., you can build a cleaner running truck than a electronically controlled engins with roughly the same power!

Don't believe all the hype you read! If it was in my budget right now, my daily driver/hauler/racer would be P-pumped too!
 
Hype so that's what its called, that's awesome lol. Maybe you can show everyone a video of a smoke free 12 sec peepump on fuel? Alright 13 sec truck. Still no? 14 sec? Let's see them lol.
 
what do you mean by smoke free? What I am sayin... Is that you can build as clean of running 12v as you can 24v! now on the topend thats a different story!
Have you built a P-pumped motor?
 
You stated above you could build a cleaner running 12v than any electronic injection. Show me. Then you changed it up and said as clean. Show me that. No I have not built a peepump. Who cares. I can show you a 12 sec VP truck that runs cleaner on fuel than any peepump you got. Show me lol
 
hp. for hp the vp pump is cleaner than the p-pump, however you can make alot more hp. with the p-pump.
 
I beg to differ, and I also stated a "MILD" setup! I'm not sayin a 13mm pump, with a 3.0 charger, I am sayin a p-pump with mild tuning, and like a sps 62!

and there are many fast clean p-pump setup's, look at garmons ram 2000, 6-700 hp on No.2 and it is very clean running.!

Yes on a vp engine, you can turn the electronics off and it run cleaner, but what I mean is: It has been done, hp for hp without turning any boxes off or moving an afc or plate, a 12v "CAN" be cleaner running!

I didn't mean for my posts to turn into a bash fest, I was simply stating, my opinions and what I have seen! We all know, everyone on this forum knows everything there is to know about these trucks!

Garmon who? Is he like the peepump punjabi? Why is it that every hilljack east of the Mississippi believes there will be 72 virgins waiting for them in heaven if they peepump their 24v? Come on peepumpers show me your fast clean burning peepumps. Ok forget the fast part just show me one that doesn't smoke like a 74 chitbox Nova.

maybe everybody around around your parts just doen't know how to tune a "Pee-pump"! Vp's will "NEVER" compete!

anways, Do you have small mans syndrome? or something? does it really matter who can do what with what? you know what you know, and I know what I know, just leave it there. Forums are for opinions and real world experience, not just to see who you can prove wrong because you are on the other side of the pc!
