I was recently having some trouble with my transmission going into limp mode. It was starting out in first gear instead of 2nd. I made one pull with the transmission starting in 2nd. It wasnt a good run because the converter wouldnt lock, but it was a lot easier to spool the turbo and I could stall the converter to a higher RPM easier, I guess because of the reduced gear reduction. My question is, would it cause any damage to the transmission to start out in 2nd when sled pulling? If I wire the TV lever wide open instead of running it with the throttle like normal, the transmission will start out in 2nd gear. Would it really hurt anything if I just wired the TV lever wide open and let it start out in 2nd?

Tim Barber told me when he built mine to never let it start in 2nd it only takes a few times to smoke a tranny. I have a little box from DTT to keep mine from doing it.

The reason it is spooling easier is because the clutches in the tranny are walking. Same thing as trucks spooling easier on the high side.

If the input shaft of the tranny is not moving the torque reduction really doesn't come into play. The convertor doesn't know what gear it is in. It just knows in and out speed. So if it is easier to spool, the input shaft is moving, which means something in the trans is slipping, and my guess would be the rear clutch.
