I am looking to maybe regear this season, but the budget is limited.

To go with 4.88 I need to buy the R&P's front and rear, 2 new carriers for the higher gear ratios, install kits, and then pay for labor to install them as I don't know how to set-up gears.

My other option is 4.10's which may be alot cheaper and easier to move up to, my carriers can use a 4.10 gear set, plus many guys have 4.10's and want to trade straight up for 3.54's. Plus if I ever decide to build another truck and de-tune this one back to a street truck, I can still drive it on 4.10's where as 4.88's will be a PITA.

How much difference would 4.88's make over 4.10's?

4.88 or 5.13 will make a huge diffrence in a 5 speed or 6 speed truck that makes it power in 3600 + rpm range but you have to have the power to make it work

I think on the d80 the 4.10 use a different carrier than the 3.54. A ring gear spacer was not available when I looked, as the gears are hub centric, not bolt centric like on the 60. Of course if you can find a 4.10 thick gear, or you might be able to shim it enough to get by with your 3.54 carrier. I have a welded 3.54 carrier laying around somewhere. It is an open one piece one.

What about 4.30? 4.88 for D80's are big dollar.

You can use a ring gear spacer on the d60 to reuse that carrier.

I would probably run what you have and see what kind of power you have and the track speed your able to turn, and then pick a gear ratio that gets you on the low side of the tcase at the tightest tracks you have. If you need to jump to the high side make it for the long and/or loose tracks.

Thats what I used to do with 570hp and only 4000rpms, used 4th low on the tight tracks and 2nd hi on the loose and muddy tracks. Worked pretty good when I was only able to turn 3200-3400 on the track. I'm hoping to be able to turn 4200 on the track this year. Doing so in 4th/4low with 3.54's is gonna result in alot of wheel speed, or broken parts I think.

5.13's direct drive, low with 33's.
Pump and charger netted me 4200-4300 down track, break free all year.
Tried 2nd high at Scheid in qualifying = crap. Tight or loose I ran 4th low all year and it ran good.

pockets aren't deep enough, looking at over $1000 just for the gears and install kits, then i gotta get carriers or lockers, pay the labor for installs, and a set of axles for out back.

Grab the axles and roll son SCS makes the 35's, then next u can get one of their mini spools when u can afford it. U can set the 80 up at home as I did.

tj either way you go you will need a new rear carrier the split on a dana 80 is between 3.54 and 4.10 the dana 60 is no big deal it splits between 4.10 and 4.56 but you can either get a thick gear for your carrier or a spacer from mr gasket to use the thin standard gear set on your carrier.

I think thats the best setup for the manual pullers. If you change gears youre going to have to get new carriers anyway. I skimped out and bought 35 spline SCSs and have managed to twist both of them. Of course that was with 35inch duals:hehe:

Hey TJ I might sell my mini spool. Has 1 hook on it. (Allensville)

Im going to try and go full spool this year...

Hey TJ, I bet Jim Balsley [Balsley Auto] would swap you gears. Worth a try. He builds/rebuilds wrecks/repos Dodge trucks. He is in Connellsville, PA. 724-455-6100

That is what I am going to run this year, I aint scared of em'

I was considering a 4.56, maybe that would be a comprimise between the two.

To my knowledge the 4.10 and up gears use a different carrier.

Looks like I might be making a trade with someone local for a set of 4.10's.

I wish I could get something better, but this is going to be the most affordable way and my truck will still be able to drive on the street if I attempt to take it to a car show or two.
