4" vs 5" exhaust

Up until recently, I was planning on adding a set of stacks someday, but now I'm leaning more towards a full length exhaust system due to decreasing bed space. I've heard that most times, 4" will actually perform slightly better than 5". My main concern is the sound. I'll be running it straight piped. Does the 5" sound that much better, or different than the 4"? I'd go 5" but I was eyeing up SourceAutomotive's 4" turbo back, dual outlet exhaust. Its hard to beat the price, and its the only aluminized dual outlet system I've seen yet. I'd like to cap it off with Silverlines "black" chrome tips. What do you all think? Will I be happy with the sound of a 4" system? I've heard that the 5" has a deeper sound to it. My stock 3" exhaust is just to high pitched for my tastes.

5 is deeper than 4 is deeper than 3. I've never run my 5" straight piped. 4" straight piped was loud enough for me. I like my muffled 5".

I think I'm starting to lean more towards a good, cheap aluminized 5" single system. I can deal with the noise, I used to drive a Jeep Wrangler with the 4.0 with a flowmaster series 40 muffler that resonated something fierce. I'm looking at a system by either PowerbyPoole, or from SourceAutomotive. Are either of those good? And hows the fittment of a 5" system? I imagine it gets pretty close to the spare tire.

I absolutely had to run a 5", lol. I have a 5" down pipe and @ the bell adapter where it went to 4" it literally blew my exhaust out from underneath my truck, lol. Talk about back preassure. So, I went with a "homemade" straight piped stack for now, NOT recommended, LOUD. But it looks nice and didnt kill the bank. I also hate stacks, but I know track officials, and track lights/beams prefer them, Darn sacrafices, lol.

A straight piped 5 inch system isn't to bad, been running one for 3+ years now, the only time it really gets unbearable is towing heavy, the drone inside the cab is pretty bad. Put a muffler on it and most of that goes away though. I went from a straight piped stock exhaust (REALLY LOUD!) to the fiver setup and couldn't be happier.

Performance wise the 4 systems will do just a touch bit better with a stock turbo, the five inch will loose you a few ftlbs of torque, but gain you about 150* of EGT reduction.

Billysgoat, do you have a pick of your truck with the Ricksons on it? And how do you like them? I was thinking of possibly going that route when it comes time for tires and wheels.

Sure it's not. Me having to yell at you to have a conversation in bama was just the whiskey. LOL

And unless your building a show truck or live in an area where they salt the roads, I'd get a cheap aluminized exhaust. 9 times out of 10 they will out last your truck and for the cost difference between them you can buy 2 aluminized systems.

They salt the roads around here where I live, but I still think I'll be ok with the aluminized. We get lots of trucks in the shop with aluminized that see a lot more salt than mine, and they last a good long time.

I have Source Automotives 5 inch on my truck has a nice deep sound not loud at all. The fit on his 4 inch single and dual systems are excellent as are the 5 inch cant go wrong on either of the.

This is an older photo with the truck actually having a touch bit of shine to it, look through my gallery and you can find a few more. They are GREAT for towing and mileage per set of tires.

You were yelling?? LOL LOL

I have been running Source Automotives 4" straight pipe system for 2 yrs now on my truck. It has held up very well in the snowy salty winters we have in chicago. The 4" system sounds very good straight piped, I do like the sound of the 5" but the 4 was in my budget at the time. Mine is a single outlet with a long 5 inch tip on it. It's a very good system for the price!

i love gus' 5" FBD straight kit.....it was inexpensive, easy to install, looks great, and most importantly sounds awesome....go 5" and dont look back

After running a single turbo and a 5" with a muff and resonator then going to Twins I'm going to ditch the 5" for an old 4" system, chicks like it much better.....priorities.
