I just bought a truck off a friend of mine and am having some issues with the trans and it not wanting to shift when it should
If you take off in 1st gear it will not shift at WOT, it will rev to 3400 and then when I let off it takes a second and then shifts into second. 2-3 gear is the same thing and it wont shift unless you back off the throttle. Then once its in 3rd if you have it floored sometimes it will kick back down into 2nd gear.
What can be causing this? I'm new to the whole diesel world so bare with me.
The truck also did the same thing for him
It used to have a convertor lock up switch that he removed, could that be causing the problem?
Truck is an 01 with 207000 miles. Has Air dog 150, Edge Comp Box, A j hook looking thing on wastegate, BHAF, 4" Exhaust, A billet convertor(Not sure on brand), And unsure of any other trans work. He didnt know it had trans work done then I bought it and sent a picture of the convertor to my friend and he confirmed it was a billet unit. I believe it has trans work done because it doesnt slip with the edge on 5x5. Also it has a trans temp gauge and ive never seen it over 175*

Thanks for any input

Also thought i'd add in that under normal driving conditions it takes a while to shift into 2nd. Under normal acceleration it wont shift into 2nd til 2400 or so and 2-3 is also delayed slightly

Replace the transducer and gov pressure solenoid, use the oversized borg Warner solenoidand your pproblems should go away.

Could be a gov solenoid problem, tv cable too tight or the tv valve is binding.

Lavon beat me to it.

If the cable is adjusted correctly, I would first suspect the speed sensor on the OD case. $12-15.

I found a thing online and it looks like the TV cable is adjusted correctly.
What should I try first? Speed sensor, or the gov pressure solenoid and transducer.

When the speed sensor fails it normally won't shift out of first altogether, when its a transducer it often does limp mode 2nd or 3rd gear starts or hang in 1st gear. Very seldom does the speed sensor cause 2-3 shift issues.

I'd change the solenoid and Transducer in the valve body. Or if you have a friend with 47 or 48re you could quickly swap speed sensors with him to verify it being ok before dropping the pan.

Okay I'll go ahead and order the solenoid and transducer. Is this the correct one? Any places sell it cheaper? A618 / 47RE Borg Warner Heavy Duty Governor Pressure Solenoid

Thanks, Ryan

That's the one and a good price. Might as well do the transducer while your in there.

hope you solved it ive had my own issues but just as LAmiller said replacing the pressure transducer usually solves the "hunting" issue...... cheap and easy fix imo compared to buying a trans
