How strong is 5th gear for sled pulling? is it something that will go out after a few pulls?

The gear is plenty strong for pulling.

However it is a tall gear and you will have to pull on the low side of the tcase and usually it will take small tires to keep it lit up or a very light sled.

Im running 285/75/R16 with that gear, it a little hard to get started but it seamed to pull good. i was using 2nd gear high side last season. i think 3rd gear would be to much.

nv4500 or nv5600? on a 4500 4th low is a little faster than 2nd high, what about that? nv5600 5th is 1:1 so it should be plenty strong. nv4500 i'd be a little worried even with a fully splined 5th gear. Plus what axle ratio? What size charger?

i ran 4th 4 low on the hard track at TS and it pulled me all they way down to 3k...i never would have got moving in 5th

There must be some loose tracks in other parts of the country. On the moist clay tracks around here a direct drive launch will get you a smoked clutch or a snuffed charger.

Tj, i pulled 5th gear this weekend at chestertown and once i got it rolling that thing halled butt down the track. first hook was 336' so they set the sled heavier and second hook was 326'.

Every other lower gear i've tried just seems like i need a higher gear.

I have only been pulling 4th/4-low with my 6-speed. I deffinatly have enough power to try 5th but in most cases I think I will just blow out my tires once I have it going in that high of a gear.

Most of you guys only have maybe 4000rpm or a little more where I am 5500-6000rpm so leaving the line and its not dropping below 4400 the whole way down the track. So I am pulling with as much if not more wheel speed than most of you are. If you don't have a real good clutch and a charger that likes to stay lit...I would stick with 4th gear...especially on a hard track.
