I was reading this link on 5th gear nut repair.
Dodge 94-04 NV4500

And it mentioned that the factory began installing an updated nut beginning in the 99 models. So is it really needed to go with one of the aftermarket locking nuts or is the so called factory upgrade a good fix for the 99 and later.

mine has the updated nut. no issues as of yet, but I dont have many miles on it.

I've had the updated nut back completely off one time and started backing off another and destroyed 5th gear. Its a piece of SH*T! I Ended up doin some thread bashing this last time after I torqued it down. I've heard of people welding them to.

Thanks for the inputs. The truck in question is a 99 and getting ready to have an SB ofe installed. The owner figured if its needed to go ahead and have it fixxed then. He only plans on lite mods. I realize the shaft is the problem and the nut, stock or aftermarket is a band-aid.

if i ever have an issue, or its apart for something else, im going to throw a few tig beads on it. 2 or 4, 3/8" long or so.

I would not weld on the mainshaft !! I have seen several break at the weld due to to much heat being applied.....The upgraded nut DOES work if installed correctly NOT exactly by dodges procedure...... Best fix is the fully splined mainshaft and new nut done right....

thanks I know almost everything....

you weld the nut to the gear, not to the shaft.

welding it NOT needed in any manner.....if you torque the nut ++ some with lots of locktite, under the gear,on the threads under the nut,and tighten up the nut then stake it deeply...I have not had one fall off yet !!!!

And this is removeable so you can work on the trans later with out having to hack, cut, richard around getting it apart....

ive seen the nuts with the set screws and lock tite back off. lugging the truck in 5th seems to vibrate and stress the gear just right. I've even seen ones that were tacked on with a mig welder break the tacks, thats why I suggest tigging it on with some small beads.

I agree lugging them in 5th is the reason they loosen up. The best nut only has 1 screw. Cleaning the splines under the gear, cleaning the gear, puting locktite on the inside of the gear will take up some of the gap between loose splines in the nut/shaft and take out the movement of the gear on the shaft, stoping the working of the nut loose....while haveing the nut over tight and staked.

My experince is clean everything good, put it together with loctite and run the nut tight with a air hammer so it is very tight. I would recomend the updated nut, It won't hurt and it might just help. If your rebuilding the trans put the upgrade mainshaft in. As for welding, i've never tryed it, but i wouldn't try welding stuff thats been heat treated. Seams to make the steel around the weld very brittle.
