I've got a line on an 08 F250 with 93k miles on it, one owner super clean lariat truck. I don't know anything about the 6.4s other than they are twin turbo'd and with a spartan tune will haul azz. I'm more concerned with how the motor will hold up in the long run. How is it compared to the 6.0's?

beter than the 6.0 IMO - do the usual deletes and enjoy.

Headgaskets, egr coolers, radiators are some of the most common failures.

get a FULL Oasis report and check engine hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! idling/excessive regens is what kills these things

116000 miles and 6100hrs on my company truck and only problem I've had with it is the dpf took a crap since it has excessive regens. Other then that no complaints and we abuse these trucks. I've been very impressed with them so far.

ive had two of thses trucks only problem fromt eh first one was egr valve, the next one was fan clutch controll and fan motor for the air, and rear flex pipe went to leaking.

that one got the cab pulled, its not a very common issuse.

6.4 issues.......

EGR coolers leaking and bent rods, cracked pistons, injectors hung and melted pistons. I have 2 of them at the shop, both with a melted piston.

flex pipe isn't totally uncommon

timing cover is kinda tough to "inspect"

Depends where it breeches .. If it breaches into crank case its not that hard to put 2 and 2 together. I had one preach right behind the water pump all cavitated (sp) told the customer to replace it ASAP.. didnt have the money to do so. pulled oil fill cap and saw that it was wet with little droplets and it was steaming slightly came back 2-3 weeks later spun #3 bearing . seized broke rod.. LOL

Careful with the big tunes on these my friend had one with the spartin and six months later head gaskets were done.

Yup. they wont puke stock. but the min you put the tune on it.. shes popped. you could take the tune out and it wont puke anymore.

H&s also blows too

I just got rid of my 09 F-350. I had the DPF deleted, intake, and exhaust. I dynoed once on hallers and made something like 618 or 614 with tunes from Eric and Innovative. Often I would merge on to the highway and boil the tires of accidentally. I managed to run a 13.1 with it (pretty sure it had a 12.9X in it). I took it to several sled pulls and always came in 1st or 2nd (usually behind my brothers 6.4). It had 32K on the odometer and never really had a problem. Mine was an XL so the cab was loud, and even being a regular cab it only got 15mpg. Other then the fuel millage it was a great truck that made it through 3 seasons of pushing a big Boss plow with wings.

Been running the H&S HD300 daily since my truck was deleted (104K now). Not to mention they recently released the MCC tuning, basically EFI live for the 6.4 Superduty so if you dont like the tunes you change it yourself. Although Id take the bus or drive a gasser before touch a 6.0 just my opinion.

Yeah mine only gets 14-15 around town but the other day I was comparing what my mildly built 12v fuel economy and its about 14-18mpg, so really not that big of a difference. Also the 12v is probably lighter being a 94 reg cab.

Is there any truth to a story a shop told me that if the truck is not dpf deleted before 15-20k miles it will spin a bearing and/or throw a rod before 100k?

Got to say b.s. as mine wasn't deleted till after 100k miles and not one problem with the bottom end of the engine.
