My brother has a 04.5 CTD & this turbo always lit at 1200rpm. Lately it won't light off till 2000rpm & no codes present. He is getting lots of smoke of course so we figured boost leak, nope. Cleaned the airfilter, no better? I checked the endplay in the turbo shaft & it has in/out play as well as what seems to be excessive up/down play. Question is.... How much in/out play should this turbo have? How can I check it without a dial indicator? Thanks
 
If it's got in and out play then that's usually a sign that it's bad. That turbo should light like a bandit. I know my old one would light insanely fast.

Like I said 1200rpm before, now 2000-2300rpm. Gotta be the turbo. It moves in/out about 1/8"
 
Check the wastegate rod make sure it isn't stuck open, sounds like that might be your problem.

In -out play should be no more than .003-.005. I would start turbo shopping.

The turbo is only 9 months old, still under warranty. HTT said to send it in & it is covered, but wants $575 to upgrade to 62/71/14. Just might get another turbo, sell this one after it gets sent in for rebuild. I'd like to find someone who wants a 62/65/12 & just sell it after HTT rebuilds it, any takers?
 
the only difference between 2nd and 3rd:
front cover
waste gate bracket
a shim under the compressor wheel.

if you know what you are doing you can do it your self and just buy the parts from htt.
