Hey guys,
I've been reading on this site for quite awhile and wearing out the search function, finally ready to make my first post so here goes.

With my current set up as shown in signature below.

Would I be better off keeping my 35/40-14 (non-wg) and having head work done? (Port & polish, 60lb springs, Ti keepers, orings, studs)

OR

Replacing my 35/40 with a 62/65/12 or 14?

I can really only afford to do one or the other right now. I've lasted this long without studs but I know I'm pushing it, I can max my 60lb boost gauge at will. My thinking though is that a gated 62 would be way safer on my HG and flow more air so that's the direction I'm leaning. I'm also very interested in the D-Tech 62/65/12 for the price.

I drive this truck everyday and hook 8-10k to it on a regular basis. I'd love to here some suggestions. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Your maxing out a 60lb boost gauge with a 35/40 turbo? Your lucky you haven't blown that turbo up. Get a 62/71/14 and you'll find a LOT more power. Not to mention much lower egt's and much less risk to blowing your headgasket or turbo up. Porting and polishing the head would be a waste trying to flow all of that air through a 35/40.

I'd stay away from a 62/65/12. I had one and while it spooled awesome it choked on the top end. One member on here (ph4tty) went from a 64/65/12 to a 62/71/14 and picked up like 30-50hp. My 62/71/13ss spools about a 100-200rpm slower than my 62/65/12 but the top end is much better and the drive pressure is lower as well.

62/65-14

or 62/65-13 stainless

those would be the best all around

imo

if you do the 71 turbine it will be more fun w/o the trailer but less fun with it

head work is over rated

Thanks for the quick reply BgBlDodge. This is the kind of stuff I'm looking for!

Yes. If I make an aggressive pass on the highway boost will shoot up to 57-60 psi and the pointer just flutters the whole time til I let off. When I have either of my trailers in tow I watch the gauge and just let out of the throttle when it gets to 40-45psi. I've researched the 62/71/14 but worry about its responsiveness compared to a 62/65/12 or 14 while towing. If I could be sure it spooled quick enough I'd be all about it.

Thanks a bunch, and keep the advice coming!

I just don't want it to be a total dog down low while towing...I realize it's all a compromise though. Just want to make the best choice before I drop the cash.
Head work is overrated? I'll keep that in mind, last thing I wanna do is spend money where it's not needed.

Thanks for your reply DTanklage! Keep'em coming guys, this is great!

I believe the 62/71 is the best all around turbo, for towind, dd, racing, etc. it will be a little laggier then 35/40 hybrid but you just learn to drive it!

For the money it costs to P&P a head you could have made more power with a different turbo of the same cost. P&P'd heads are nice if you have the money but there cost-benefit ration for a mildly built truck sucks. With a single turbo you shouldn't need o-rings or studs, but 60-lb valve springs are good if you run 3500+rpm

With the fuel you have I'd probably go with the 62/71. But if you really tow a lot you could get by with a 65mm turbine but you'd have to watch it more carefully
$.02

I have the HTT 62/71/14 and it is a great all around turbo. My problem is i out grew it to fast. High Tech is good about upgrading their turbo or downsizing it to fit you. I wish i would have opted for the 62/71/13ss, it would make a better top charger for my twin set up that is in the works.
High Tech Turbo 62/71/13ss all the way!

Headwork is very UNDERRATED IMO!
With any turbo there is good and bad with head porting there is no bad, with the exception of cost! Back in the day long before Piers' left pdr he hooked me up with a stage 2 p&p and o-ringed head it was all smiles! I picked up over 30 rwhp and dropped my egts over 200*! At the time I was running a Piers' modded 40 and was around 400rwhp. Months later I added twins and didn't have to worry about blowing the headgasket!

Head porting is a good thing but for the average joe isn't feasible or needed. He would see a lot more benefits from upgrading the turbo than he would a ported head.

65 OR 71 Turbine

OK, I'm gonna put my money towards a new charger...

SO

The new question is do I go with the 62/65 or 62/71???

Remember guys, I use my truck on weekends to pull our horse trailer (8-10k) and have a Goerend 10/20 convertor (extra low stall). Honestly, I really wanna go with the 62/71 but I'm a little worried about its spool up while towing. I've found on hear some guys think the 71 spools just fine and others don't like it? I found the thread where Ph4tty gained 44hp going from a 64/65/12 to the 62/71/14, this really makes me wanna go 71. Yet I've also found threads where its been said that the 71 turbine isn't worth it with just a 62mm compressor.

I know I'm starting to *bdh* but just want to make the right choice. A buddy of mine deals with II so choice is most likely between the PS 62/65/14 and the SPS 62/71/14.

Help me out guys, if you got anything I wanna hear it!!!

I don't know how well it's going to work but given the reaction of others who've tried them these flanges which shut one scroll of the turbo off during low boost are something to consider. I hope to have mine up and running in about two weeks time. What this would allow this particular poster to do is run the larger turbine side charger for less back pressure and more top end hp but have the spool, maybe even faster spool, of the small turbine side.

Get rid of the 370's and 022's, if you tow stay away from the 71mm turbine.

thats exactly what i was thinking

low stall tc and close to 20,000 pounds i would go with ddp stg 2 or 3 inj and a 65 wheel

great milage and will pull that trailer up anything

62/65/14, with some modern 5x.012s, and other DVs...

My truck is mostly for work, and it always, has about 1000lbs in tools in it, plus, Boilers, Package Unit A/Cs etc.... I needed something driveable and controllable... plus, I haul anything from my old mans boat, to heavy equipment for jobs......

Anyway, thats the package that I put together under the advise of others, and love it... Do I wish I could go more? Sure, the only way thats happening is with twins for me though...still waiting on some of those magic 7mm DVs......

Regardless, this is a fun package, and completely WORKABLE, and Daily Driveable...turbo spools nice and quick...and with the 14mm housing, not really choking up top... too bad anyway. I am running a 4K GSK with one of the springs removed, so, I am only getting 3400ish of hard fuel anyway(just fine with me), but, its nice and fat down low....

Great work combo, and even DD... if you werent going to tow, I would say 71mm....

My 2 cents...

71 wheel is great for top end, but if you're pulling trailers with an auto at less than 2000ish rpms you're going to want the smaller turbine. The good new is that 62/14 is one of the cheaper s300 modded turbos available.
