In need of some immediate help. Our companies plow/salt truck (1991 GMC TopKick with a CAT 3116) has broken down and has been left in the parking lot of a funeral home for the past couple of hours. We flat towed it until there was no more air in the brake system and can not go any further.

Last night the truck began running rough... however after being up for 45+ hours plowing and salting, the driver cannot recal exactly what the issues were. The truck was left away from the office last night however was plugged in. When we came to it today, it would crank, was hard starting, and evenutally took some starting fluid sprayed directly into the intake to get fired. When it did start, it would run decent just above idle with weight propped against the pedal. When the pedal was returned to idle position, the truck stalled. It refired right away without issue. That repeated about 3 or 4 times after that. When we got it running after the 4th attempt, we decided to drive it back to the office. During the drive the truck was going back and forth between blowing white and black smoke. About 5 mins and 2 miles into the drive, while cruising down the road at 35mph the engine just cut out. We coasted into a nearby street and from there it was dead. We have not been able to restart yet. It was flattowed until the air was drained and now the truck sits in a parking lot about 1/2 mile from our office.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great. We are used to dealing with diesel engines, however this is the first CAT we have run in our crew. The rest being Powerstrokes and Cummins.

Thanks in advance!!

block the rear wheels, take the T bolts attached to each of the rear airbrake cannisters, insert them in the cannisters and back off both of the spring brakes, then tow it

@Schwinn68 - Today the temps are in the 20s however over the past 24 hours it has been between 0 and 20

@rollincoalCTD - We are located in Shelby Twp. 25 miles north of Detroit.

power service 9+1+1

pour it in, keep the truck in a heated shop overnight and see if it runs in the morning.

if you have a gas powered air compressor you can also set it in the back of the truck running and hook it to the onboard air tanks so you have brakes, then flat tow again.

We used a series of fittings to recharge the air tank with an external compressor. We were also able to get it restarted, with much hesitation and drive it the 1/4 mile back to the office... However as making the turn it shut down again, and then would not even crank.

Atleast its back at the office however with snow on the way were not sure what to do from here.

3116 are famous for air in the fuel system because of a leaking injector seat. See if there is air in the return line heading back to the tank.
