Ive found an issue with a truck that was brought to me, this one has shown me a new problem with parts interchange I didnt know about. The hole in the gear case is offset too much for the sensor to read the tone ring. Data plate appears to be original, says 2000, the tone ring is just barely visible via the hole, looks suspiciously like the 01's Ive had out.

98-00 tone ring on the crank and sensor for it

98-00 Map senor has different pigtail

Cam gear was altered at some point, best I know is 01-02 got the new style. Now seems they also got a new gear case to match. Possibly have a different pump gear also. Anyone confirm this?

The truck was brought to me with severe low power and codes, one being P0341 Cam sensor. I was told the truck had an engine installed that was bought off EBAY. The owner bought the engine knowing it was a 00 and his truck was an 01. We agreed that I would change the ECM and harness/sensors to match the engine and maintain his engine warranty. After swapping everything I found the case issue. The only possible way this could have happened is an assembly error.

What computer is on it now? If the cam has a tone ring its a 01-02 cam ,the early has 1 notch on the gear also the cam sensor hole is in different spots early vs late. Computers only work with the right cam/crank combo. If his truck is an 01 than use his front cover tone ring cam and his computer and harness. If you need any help pm me I know way more about the vp than I care to

I know that much. I'm just trying to figure out what all was swapped around those years.

I knew of the cam gear issue long ago but I had never payed attention to the cases. Looks like the 98-00 use a sensor in the 12v'v timing pin location. Where the 01+ use an actual ton ring.

Timing cases change mid 00 year along with all else..... only 2 variants of parts but they CANNOT be interchanged. Timing cover or cam will need changed, change cover and run 01-02 computer, or change cam and run 98.5 to early 00 computer.
If you need correct parts I have anything you need.... just trade me

Is there any chance you could show the differences between the timing covers? I'm gonna be goin through that hassle as we speak.

I believe my 53 block was a 2000 and I bought a good 12v block, 01 harness, 02 cam gear and having the ECM flashed. Or could you give me the measurement from center of cam to center of cam sensor hole for an 01-02 case?

Thanks again man

late 00 and up front cover has a flat spot on the block side of the cam sensor boss so that the sensor can be moved closer to the block, kinda a D shape. the early is round

Both the early and late inner front and outer front cover are unique to there years. The cam gear is different and so is the pump gear. Found this out by mistakingly putting a 99 motor in my 01. Had to use my old cam gear pump gear and timing case now it works great.

I have an early front cover laying around I could get you measurements off of. My late cover is on my truck. But maybe you could confirm that way what one you have anyway.

I am not sure what the difference is but I know that it is a different part number. So I used my inner and outer front cover, cam gear and pump gear off my 2001 block on the new block that went in the truck. It works great. Definitely a different part number not sure what the differences are.

Rear of the 98.5- early00 has1 notch, the late 00-02 has a tone wheel ....60-2 wheel

Why do you say stamped covers and pump gears are different? Ive interchanged them before

Stamped covers cannot be interchanged from early years to later or the other way around. Only saying the pump gears have different part numbers not sure what the difference is. I would like to know if anyone has a clue.

The cover is different. The early one sets the cam sensor far enough out on the gear to read the notch. The 01-02 on set the sensor close to the center of the gear so it can read the toner ring. Also the two covers differ slightly near the vaccum pump. For instance try putting a 2001 outer front cover on a 2000 or earlier inner front cover. It don't work I tried it.

The pump gear and black stamped cover work on all VP years. I will give pictures later,I have interchanged them and the trucks are out there running. If your steel cover didn't work than it wasn't a VP cover

Huh. Well that is weird because the front cover I pulled off the motor I put in my truck did not fit on the inner front cover that was on my truck. I know the motor come from an industrial application so maybe that's the difference. Idk? But it was definitely a vp44 motor with a cam and crank sensor just like 98.5-00 dodges. Anyway. It was a vp cover.

Well I can't say for sure on industrial/comercial I have seen those and they appear differnt stuff .but on the dodge truck it works as I said
