I bought a used 98 12 valve previous owner had it smogged. I live in California.
I was wondering if someone has a solution to get the 12v (all mechanical) exempt so I no longer have to smog it?

ive spoke to bar and they said basically s.o.l. its a model year 98 so, you gotta smog it. if someone knows a way around it that would be great!!

Just deal with it. Find a smog guy that will "smog" it for you. I already have mine.

Garrett

Probably getting paid at work to post this from my D1

I have a 98 and had to smog it, it is a joke really. Just an inspection, they plug into the OBD II port and stab the throttle and look for smoke. If yours smokes move the afc housing all the way back so it will be a non smoking dog on test day, then move it back!

Back to where it was before that is...

On a 98 12v the OBD II port is almost worthless, only gives them engine rpm and EGR function. I deleted my EGR, but the CPU still thinks it's working thanks a relay and a resister! I will have to see next time if it will pass inspection with out it. The print out read N/A for the EGR, but Visual on the cat.

In Europe we must smog test evey vechicle .

For testing I change : injecors, adjust AFC and max rpm.

After testing I change everithing back...

Could you disable the egr and leave it in for the visual? Also if it wasn't a California original egr equipped truck would it be exempt?

Yes, you can disable the egr, problem I had was that mine would open when boosting to 30 and cause a hissing noise. When I looked at the under side of the air horn I found that the horn necked down to one inch! Changed to a pusher intake and boost jumped 5 psi and no more whistle.

Yes you could leave the system intact, use a block of plate and the relay/ resister trick and be on your merry way!

In CA all 98s are subject to smog, what is required is debatable based on original equipment.

simple solution... leave this bull dung state! i had a shot at a "grail" truck in perfect condition but didnt buy it because of the dam smog laws!!! ive seen some guys register it in smog exempt counties and others register out of state, but if you register out of state your going to have to have drivers license from that state. if not your going to get tickets galore!

I got the holy Grail, with all the options, leather, heated mirrors, ect. I needed the quad cab for my kids and 98 was the only way to get the 12valve.

Is any one having trouble with smog? It is alot easier than on a gas engine, just a snap test for smoke and a visual. Save your stock parts and if you can't tune to pass, swap the stock parts back on for the test.
