Where do i get the key that goes on the pump to advance the timing and which one do i use.?

The pump keys are specific to that pump and can only be used with that pump. Any other key in there will result in the truck not running right. Don't ask me how in the world it works cause I can't for the life of me figure it out but I've read numerous reports of people trying different keys and the truck running horrible.

Actually, the timing can be advanced or retarted based upon which key is currently in the pump. There are over 30 different keys. What works best is a case of trial and error to get it right. Contrary to popular belief, the truck will run with altered timing, no codes are set. I time my pumps, and also those for customers, it really makes a noticable difference. Yes we are talking about the VP44. Generally 1.5 to 2 degrees is enough to satisfy your needs. When you get it right, smoke will be less and power will be up. I have the keys and the conversion sheet if you need to see which key you currently have.

I concur. The vp pump usually has a three digit number on the I.D. area like an 034. Thats the key in your pump.

Would advancing the internal pump timing be too much timing if you are already running a timing box like edge comp or are 2 or 3 degree increments minor enough not to affect much? I accidentally stacked my smarty timing with my comp box timing a couple times and truck didn't really like a certain lower rpm, almost like it was knocking. I wouldn't mind knowing where to get different VP44 timing gears as well. I am guessing the HRVP already has an advanced timing key in it, but I do not know for certain, I am just guessing from the better mileage and responsiveness switching from a stock vp to an hrvp.

I thought even if you swap keys, the ECM would adjust the timing to account for it, therefore it made no difference?

If I knew this was a possibility, I would have swapped keys along time ago to pull some timing out of mine...

All the ECU does is control the amount of timing, not the base timing reference.

Very interesting thread. I'm running a hotrod pump with timing advance with a smarty. I was running the smarty on the odd programs which add timing until I got word of some people having head gasket issues due to the timing advance of their box combined with the timing advance of the pump. The truck runs slightly cooler with less smoke with the timing from the smarty, but dyno'd 542 without the extra timing so I guess I don't need it.

I would love to see a conversion sheet. This might be pritty dang niffty.
