any problems with replacing ECM and PCM?

friends truck got struck by lightning and suspect ecm and pcm are both fried. cannot get it to display codes, just NO BUS. will locate an OBD scanner to pull codes. does the VIN or anything have to be programmed in or can you just swap the ecm/pcm from a donor truck?

vin does not. i would be happy to supply a recovery program if needed at no charge. what year truck and tranny does he have?
