Got the head off and the gasket looks pretty tough no visable combustion past the fire ring but the material on the gasket is all falling off. I measured the protrusion on the Orings and they were all around .006. I always here people say they should be .012. Can they compress that much after 4 installs? Has anyone attempted to replace them. Here is a couple of pics of the HG everyone I have showed say it looks like cheap construction that and the fact that it is 2 pieces of steel laminated together by silicon vs the cummins one that is one piece of steel.

Yes the rings will wear down. I replace the rings everytime the head comes off. If you take a super sharp punch and find where the ring is welded together, punch straight down to split the ring then turn your punch on a 45* angle and start peeling it out. once started you can usually grab it with a visegrip and just pull it out.

What type of stainless wire and were is the best place to get it I looked on Mc Master Carr and they have alot of choices. Spring, Standard, Lashing and Tie? I need to get .041 and .051 the guy that did mine wasn't sure what they used when they did it 3 years ago. He also said that .006 that I have would be sufficent.

Hey Jeff, I measured my protrusion when my head was off. It was about 0.006 to 0.007" if I remember correctly. It went right back on...

The orings I've seen were not welded together at the ends, just a tight fit.

Thanks for the info Jesse and yes mine are not welded together just a snug fit. Maybe someday we will get to make a pass with these trucks without breaking something. I've been to 4 pulls and have yet to have it run the way it did last year or not break!
